Will being a Mormon cost Romney the presidency?

January 30, 2012

A University of South Carolina Aiken professor has authored a study that shows the Mormon faith of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney poses a challenge for religious conservative voters.

Romney did nearly twice as well among non-evangelical voters as he did among evangelicals, having won just 22 percent of their vote, according to exit poll data analyzed by Political Science Professor Bob Botsch following the South Carolina GOP primary.

A team from the USC Aiken Social Science and Business Research Lab compared Romney’s percentage of the vote in each of South Carolina’s 46 counties with the percentage of Southern Baptists who live in that county. They found that where there are lower concentrations of Baptists, Romney won a higher percentage of the vote.

“Mitt Romney is facing a problem similar to that faced by John F. Kennedy in 1960,” Botsch stated in his study. “The problem can be captured in almost the same question JFK’s staff asked a little over a half century ago.

Would religious conservatives vote for someone of his religion (Catholic then and Mormon now)? Strong empirical evidence from the South Carolina GOP primary suggests that the answer is often no.”

- Kelly Jasper, The Augusta Chronicle

What role do you think religion plays in presidential politics?

Do you think Romney's religion will impact in his abilty to be elected?

Do you think Americans are ready for a Mormon president?

Will you vote for him if he is the Republican nominee?

Why doesn't the ATM want my card?

Summary:  Over the past few weeks I've noticed a change to the ATM I visit on West Broad in front of Five Guys. It's a Bank of America ATM and the main reason I like it is because there is only a $2 fee to use it.   Over the past few weeks I've noticed a change to the ATM I visit on West Broad in front of Five Guys. It's a Bank of America ATM and the main reason I like it is because there is only a $2 fee to use it. The last few times I visited the ATM, I put my card in the slot and the ATM immediatley gave me the card back.  I was a little alarmed at first and tried to put the card back in but the screen prompted me to input my PIN number instead. I was able to complete my transaction but it threw me out of my comfort zone. read more
