Which movie this weekend?

December 19, 2012

It's always a family tradition on Christmas Day.

Mom is exhausted from staying up late wrapping gifts and getting up early to make breakfast for Christmas morning gift exchange.

After cleaning up, my mother always looks at my father and says, "Why don't you take the boys to a movie and let me rest."

It doesn't matter how old I get, this happens every year.

Not begins the hard part.  Which movie will my father, my brother and I like and want to see?

There are a good number of movies opening this weekend in Athens:

ANNA KARENINA: Set in late-19th-century Russia high-society, the aristocrat Anna Karenina enters into a life-changing affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. 2 hrs. 9; R.

COMPLIANCE: When a prank caller convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young employee, no-one is left unharmed. Based on true events. 1 hr. 30; R.

DJANGO UNCHAINED: With the help of his mentor, a slave-turned-bounty hunter sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner. 2 hr. 45; R.

THE GUILT TRIP: As inventor Andy Brewster is about to embark on the road trip of a lifetime, a quick stop at his mom’s house turns into an unexpected cross-country voyage with her along for the ride. 1 hr. 35; PG-13.

HITCHCOCK: A love story between influential filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and wife Alma Reville during the filming of Psycho in 1959. 1 hr. 38; PG-13.

JACK REACHER: A homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper who shot five random victims. 2 hr. 10; PG-13.

LES MISERABLES: In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever. 2 hrs. 37; PG-13.

PARENTAL GUIDANCE: Artie and Diane agree to look after their three grandkids when their type-A helicopter parents need to leave town for work. Problems arise when the kids’ 21st-century behaviors collide with Artie and Diane’s old-school methods. 1 hr. 44; PG.

THIS IS 40: A look at the lives of Pete and Debbie a few years after the events of “Knocked Up”. 2 hr. 14; R.

The only movie that interests me this year is "This is 40."  Gee, I wonder why?

I am sure my brother will want to see Anna Karenina or Les Miserables and my father will want to see any movie that features a dog.

Which movie are you most interested in seeing over this long weekend?

Do you have any recommendations for movies that my whole family would enjoy?

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
