What's Up With This, Commissioners Girtz and Kinman?!!

November 8, 2012

So, the ACC Commission has allowed a building moratorium for the Buena Vista district...Hooooray for the townies!

Now, let's travel across town to South Milledge Avenue, where four local small businesses are being run out in three weeks.

Courtyard, LLC, a land speculation company, applied to the ACC Planning Commission to build some sort of four story thing on the land where these businesses sit.

THE PLANNING COMMISSION TURNED COURTYARD, LLC DOWN ON THIS PROJECT!! Normally, this would be the end of this proposed development.

But however, Commissioners Girtz and Kinman pulled some sort of executive levers to move this project on through.

Now these two Commissioners were curiously silent during the Downtown WalFart development debacle...Let's see what they have to say here.

Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. Highlight: Would set hours of operation of each Athens-Clarke County "building campus" -- e.g. City Hall, the courthouse and Dougherty Street government building -- at 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Park hours would either be set by the Athens-Clarke County manager or the Mayor and Commission. The ordinance has been derided by members of Occupy Athens and others as seeking to enforce a curfew on public property, thus damaging their First Amendment right to peacably assemble for long-term protests. read more
