Was there no Muhammad?

September 15, 2012

Are jihadists killing and dying for fiction? While Judaism and Christianity have been subjected to close historical scrutiny and criticism for a few centuries, Islam hasn't received the same inspection.
In his book, Did Muhammad exist?,

Robert Spencer examines the historical records and archaeological findings related to Muhammad, the Qur’an, and the early days of Islam.

Robert Spencer has his MA in Religious Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has been studying Islamic theology, law, and history in depth since 1980. He questions whether or not Muhammed existed and he presents evidence about the fundamental assumptions of the origins of Islam. Some of his points include:

The earliest biographical material about Muhammad dates from at least 125 years after his reported death.

Six decades passed before the Arabian conquerors—or the people they conquered—even mentioned Muhammad, the Qur’an, or Islam.

There is evidence that the Qur’an was constructed from existing materials—including pre-Islamic Christian texts.

Even Muslim scholars acknowledge that countless reports of Muhammad’s deeds were fabricated.

There are many indications that Arabian leaders fashioned Islam for political reasons.

We’ve recently been asked here was there no Jesus? We can also ask, what is the real story of Muhammad and early Islam, and are jihadists killing and dying for a fabrication named Muhammad?

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
