What's going on today?

Also going on today.....Our 17 year old daughter Emma from Watkinsville, GA won "Best Junior Handler" at the Eukanuba National Championships down in Orlando, FL. She was awarded a $2,000 scholarship, and has qualified to attend Crufts International Dog Show in March 2013 to be held in Birmingham, England. Competition was tough, she vied for the win against 168 other AKC junior handlers from all over the USA. She also made history by winning the title two years in a row! Wish I knew how to post the picture of the win on here, but don't see a way. The event will be televised in February on ABC or you can go to the AKC/Eukanuba website and see photo's of her award.

Girl, 5, severely hurt in attack by family dog

I was bitten by an English Pitbull when I was nine. It ran at me while I was walking my toy poodle. I screamed, and quickly picked up my dog and held her high over my head. The Pit jumped up at my right arm, locked onto my bicep, and wouldn't let go. He shook me like a ragdoll, and knocked me down on the ground causing me to drop my dog who ran back to my house. My dad and a neighbor ran over to me and hit the Pit with a garden spade, then rushed me to the ER. I was lucky, I only had to have 16 stitches in my arm, and a tetanus shot. My dad called the police on the Pitbull owner, and he denied that it had gotten out, but thanks to my neighbor who witnessed the attack he was issued a fine (that's all they did back then.) I love dogs, but I can't say that I have any affection for Pitbulls.

Girl, 5, severely hurt in attack by family dog

Three dogs attacked the child, but the Pit was the main aggressor. The others went into pack mentality and joined in. The child lost an ear according to the grandmother. Such a terrifying trauma for this child when a simple 10x10 pen with a lock could have prevented this incident.

Cadet quits, cites overt religion at West Point

@E.J.: I wonder why they let him go with an honorable discharge without penalty when that apprears to be against the rules.

My family are from a long line of military personnel, and it's usually because his dad is one of the "top brass."

I don't get why those who believe in a religion get ugly when they encounter others who don't.

Brinksmanship on Obama Medicaid expansion for poor

To: Mkultra27.....Sadly....It's true. But, LCP is nothing new. It's been going on for thousands of years under different names and different societies. However, it's has never been run by a country's tax payer system before, it was always a individual, or family choice, to achieve a so called humane dicision. (Some didn't wish to witness the end of their loved ones terminal illness, some were sick of waiting for their inheritence, and some were just plain insane.) Humans just hit the 7 billion mark, and those we have entrusted to run our lives are making plans to cut those numbers down by at least two thirds, so they can solve all our problems.

Brinksmanship on Obama Medicaid expansion for poor

If Obama got rid of the middlemen (insurance co's) everyone would benefit. It doesn't matter what you earn in the United Kingdom. All citizens qualify for totally free healthcare, and if anyone wishes to have elective surgery and doesn't want to wait 6 months to be scheduled, then they can go with BUPA a private insurance offered by most employers. It's the middlemen that are causing all this trouble. They are too powerful, and greedy to allow a single payer system as it would not benefit them. For example: My primary care doctor charges $55 for an office visit for anyone without insurance. However, when a patient comes in with Blue Cross Blue Shield he bills the insurance company $120, and charges the patient a copay amount on the way out of the door depending on their plan. Blue Cross/Blue Shield negotiates a set amount for each service provided, and works a discount out for the physician for treating the patient which he is contracted to accept. So if BCBS allows $45 per office visit, plus the patients 20% of $120 ($24) which is their part of the plan, he comes out ahead with an extra $14, and sometimes the whole $120 if you have not yet paid your individual/family deductable. It gets even worse for hospital stays, and surgical proceedures until you meet your total out of pocket which is usually a minimum of $2,500. It's a huge scam!

It’s time for GOP to accept reality of ObamaCare

Me too, but I'm glad we are still living. So many of my generation (friends, family, and celebs) are dying off around me, and it is starting to hit home that I should have had much more respect for my elders when I was younger. I sure do miss being 21 when I could stay out all night, eat as much as I wanted, and be a wild child.

It’s time for GOP to accept reality of ObamaCare

Sadly, yes she is losing her memory as she ages. After she collapsed at a House of Lords dinner, Maggie was admitted to St Thomas' Hospital in central London on 7 March 2008 for tests. Her daughter Carol has recounted how she was first struck by her mother's dementia when she muddled the Falklands conflict with the Yugoslav wars; she has also recalled the pain of needing to tell her mother repeatedly that her husband Denis was dead. How sad is that for such a great leader. Getting old sucks!

@E.J.: So true. E.J. All the great leaders are gone. We are living in such scary times and it seems the very young are in control and most of them are out of control. I apologise for the repeat posts....Think a gremlin got in my macbook.

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
