Man accidentally fires gun in Athens restaurant

The problem with people carrying guns for their own protection is that they are living in fear and are more likely to shoot an innocent based on that fear than having to protect themselves from a perpetrator. Paranoia and guns are a bad combination.

Georgia man killed in tractor accident

It is so easy to get hurt or killed on a farm. One lapse in concentration at a crucial time can have dire consequences. Farm work is probably more dangerous than police work. I am very thankful to the people in both professions for what they do. Rest in peace Mister Folsom.

Demolition of downtown Athens SunTrust tract 'imminent'

In the late nineties UGA moved most of the classrooms on north campus to south campus. Students found that getting to downtown during the day to be inconvenient. This resulted in many retail businesses and day restaurants struggling and closing. More bars came in and took over the open storefronts. Now, with more students living in the area we should see more retail open to serve a larger day clientele. To me this will be a good thing.

How much longer will Georgia have Bobo?

Bobo is a good quarterback coach. He has gotten better at devising game plans, but is still inconsistent. The game plan for SC 2012 was one of the worst I can remember. The game plan against Bama 2012 was really good and almost worked. He is getting better each year and if he stays we may have a darned good OC in a couple more years. If he leaves we may be in for a shock by who takes his place. Either way he is a DGD.

3 Athens bars stung for selling to minors

Our local gov't doesn't get any revenue in the form of fines from the establishments that pass the test and therefore they don't publish the names of the places. No 'atta boys' given out in this town. Also, there is no limit on the number of alcohol licenses given out. The competition is so fierce that some places look the other way when that kid comes in with money in his hand. This way the ACC gets more money from both ends. They do not care at all if kids are drinking as long as the money keeps rolling into the coffers. They give out the licenses and do the enforcing. Talk about a racket and a conflict of interest.

Georgia agency approves electric rate increase

The PSC is full of lackeys. It is apparent in every election and yet Ga voters continue to elect them because they have an R beside their names. Ironically Ga Power is socialism at its worst. Please stop being sheep people. Think before you vote.

Tests unclear on white dust coating east Savannah

In Savannah in early 1988 I found a white dust all over everything outside including my car. After washing it off I found little pits in the windshield(probably in the first layer which I think is thin plastic). That is when I decided to move.

Accuser in Winston case releases brief statement

So, in Florida if a woman is drunk to the point that her memory is impaired and is then raped the police will do nothing even if all the evidence shows that sex took place. The victim's statement of what happened gets no credence. Seems to make it open season on drunk girls. I am sure that there are perverted jerks taking note of this situation.

80 is the new 60 for retirement

Thanks a lot repubs and handlers! This mess started with Reagan and his handlers and then W and his handlers threw gas on the fire. At least the top 1% are wealthier than they have ever been and now they can pass that wealth on to their kids intact. I still cannot believe the number of dummies that rallied to the cause of eliminating the inheritance tax. The Kohns, Waltons, Walkers, DuPonts, etc. thank you for being so stupid.

Yellow Jackets' gameplan wasn't enough against Bulldogs

Recruits need to think about how those seniors(this year and last year) at Tech must feel having never been good enough to beat their biggest rival. They will have to live with that disappointment for the rest of their lives. This streak will continue as long as Johnson is the HC at Tech.

UGA football notebook: P Erickson takes punting duties from Barber

Played a game of pool with Goldberg when he was in college. Seemed like a real nice, straight-up guy. Great football player for UGA.

Athens man attacks sleeping girlfriend

This guy needs a trip to the big house. Thurston can find out what it means to be abused. Maybe being around bigger, meaner people will help him develop some empathy for the underdog. It certainly changed the attitude of a couple of people I know.

Trash-talking got QB Murray flagged

The Gaytors have always been kind of dirty. It was really bad during Spurrier's tenure. Kitchens is a low-life jerk for taking another cheap shot. I'll bet his mama was proud.

SEC coordinator of officials talks possible adjustments to targeting penalty

I understand the intent of the rule, but implementation has been downright stupid if not dishonest; i.e. Wilson in Saturday's game. Also, that little tap on the helmet by Drew as he was pulling up did not deserve an ejection. There are going to be instances when a defensive player will not be able to pull up and will make a snap decision to destroy the guy since he will be ejected anyway. Refs need to be thinking a little deeper about what they are doing.

I did not understand the second targeting penalty. If replay showed that it was a clean hit then why were we penalized? Anyone know?

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
