posted @ Thursday, October 18, 2012 - 00:01Just to add this to the discussion, why not train our police officers as first responders? There are more of them, they are already out on the street, and their cars can get there faster than a fire truck.
posted @ Sunday, July 22, 2012 - 00:33Be careful what you ask for! There is a difference between running EMS and runnning first responder calls. All ACC firefighters are first responders, and a few are EMTs or Paramedics. The fire department does not have any ambulances to transport patients to the hospital. Currently the FD does repond to medical calls when an ambulance is not availible or is going to be delayed. If the grand jury wants FD to increase it's medical call, it needs to make sure the FD budget is increased to cover the increase in fuel, supplies, training and many other expenses. The county government did not decide to switch to National, both hospitals decided to contract with National.

Show me how many lives have been saved with that stations ladder truck in the past 10 years...
I think everyone's missing the bigger picture, Cutting the ladder truck means cutting the firefighters. The truck doesn't fight the fire, the firefighters do. Yes, they can respond another truck from miles away but that delays getting enough firefighters on the scene to safely fight the fire. The ladder truck doesn't save lives...firefighters do!
posted @ Saturday, May 19, 2012 - 19:44@my thoughts: The Fire Department has grown by several stations and the number of firefighters has increased since Hansford was Chief. Faulkner had the same number of people currently in the office except for the additional Battalion Chief. When Chief George became Chief the department added another station ( #9) and needed another Battlion Chief to handle the additional workload. One Battalion Chief could not cover the paperwork, personnel issues, and respond to calls for 9 stations covering the entire county. That's what has changed! If you want to get into the issues of why those people are needed in the office, you will find that additional people are needed.

Why was the 23-year-old in the man's garage? Was the owner defending himself? Heard or the reporter left out some important information. I guess Heard wants you to run away if somebody is trying to harm you or your family and not try to protect yourself or your property.
posted @ Tuesday, May 1, 2012 - 00:52@Athens Superman: Why do we need 3 ladder trucks? Why do we need as many police cars, why do we need all the buses? ISO recommends more ladder trucks, more engines also. The ladder trucks are the biggest, slowest, and most difficult to manuver of all the fire vehicles. It takes much longer for them to arrive on scene and and cutting one would greatly increase the travel time. Cutting one would require the other 2 to respond at greater distances and increase the wear and tear on the remaining ladder trucks, requiring them to be replaced more often.

posted @ Tuesday, September 27, 2011 - 13:12@zebra dove: WOW Who lit a fire under you? If a report has errors on it, the fire department will correct them. The fire department needs the reports to be correct for their own year end reports. Why would they purposely file a report with errors? Most errors on a report is because someone involved with the fire gave them the wrong information. Insurance companies do not rely on the fire department report when they determine if they will pay out on a claim, they conduct thier own investigation. It seems like your biggest problem is with The Pointe Apartments!

A little eye candy in the yard is never a bad thing. You go girl!
I'm sure Ken is flattered to be considered eye candy.
To the others that questioned the Mayor hiring him to cut her grass, he was off duty and that is his business and none of theirs! If you would like to cut the Mayor's grass simply price it below Ken and see if you can work a second job.
Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass - Reddish said those cuts would not affect services. The firefighters are used to fill the shifts of firefighters who go on vacation, he said.
So, they don't get to go on vacation?
Not if there are not enough firefighters to man the trucks, their vacation or time off gets cancelled.

Why the sudden interest in the Fire Department? By the way, there is no secret agreement for the fire department to respond to Oconee County. It is called a mutual aid agreement. ACC has the same agreement with all the surrounding counties. Oconee County has come to ACC more than ACC has gone to Oconee County.

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases. Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
