Athens cop breaks down door to help elderly woman

Awesome Athens Clarke County Police! And I'm so glad this woman could dial 911 BEFORE she fell unconscious. I hope she's able to be saved.

Traffic stop leads to drug arrest in Athens
SilencedBlue15 - @The Oracle of the Athens Banner Herald: There is a clear difference between someone being nervous because they were stopped by the police having no criminal history or significant criminal intent and someone with significant criminal history being overtly nervous during their interaction because of their fear of being discovered for their wrongdoings.
There may be a clear difference on paper, but in real life just how is a difference drawn between the two? Are police officers trained to spot the difference?

Puzzled

"Webster appeared extremely nervous when the officer stopped him, and when the officer ran a computer check he learned there were two outstanding warrants for his arrest in Clarke County, police said."

Well, I guess the fact that he "appeared extremely nervous" helps to draw a conclusion.

Bond denied for woman accused of running over son

I'm torn here. On the one hand, she totally ignored the loss prevention officer's warning NOT to move her son after she ran him over. On the other, she's sitting in jail undoubtedly feeling all types of guilt and fear over this tragic situation. Yes, she brought it on herself, but what does law enforcement gain by not allowing her a chance to sit vigil by his side (perhaps even express her deepest remorse and sorrow) to her potentially dying son? She was very wrong here, but fear just 100% took over. I'm just convinced she never meant to intentionally hurt her son.

However, after all this is over and she's serving her time, (And yes she deserves prison time), I hope this serves as a public service announcement to think before you try to steal. Crying

Athens drug suspect fractures knee while running from police

@Watchman: I'm with you on this one. As I was reading that plea deal part, I was thinking it was supposed to be the other way around. As in drop the lesser charge(Drunk and plead to the most serious. Guess I was way off base.

UGA student assaulted by woman dressed like mime

I know this woman. Unfortunately, she is a crack-addicted schizophrenic who hardly takes her meds because she says she "doesn't need them." I happened to be in her presence about eight years ago when she alleged that government higher ups were on top of phone poles listening to everything below. Bless her heart. I really hope she gets and ACCEPTS the help she truly and so desperately needs.... Sad

Child struck by truck after leaving school bus

EVERYONE knows a motorist is bound by law to come to a COMPLETE stop whenever a school bus starts to slow down to let kids on and off it. And so now, as a result of being ignorant of the law (purposefully or not), a child has been unnecessarily injured. Jeeeeeeeeze Louise people! We have GOT to do better. Dang!!! Angry

Blog: Can we please fix the Oscars?

Summary:  Fun facts: The first-ever Oscar ceremony, held in 1929, ran a brisk 15 minutes. By contrast, the longest was in 2002, clocking in at a monstrous 4 hours and change. As usual, there are things I loved about it and things I didn't. Rather than be snarky or complain, I'll offer a few suggestions on how the organizers might bring the show into the 21st century. Winter storm drama

Athens-Clarke County police officers responded to Pinewood Estates North on a 911 call concerning a heated domestic dispute. it reportedly was an argument over the lack of heat and food in a family's trailer and a woman was threatening to stab anyone who tried to take away her 7-month-old child. State patrol responded also, from their post nearby on U.S. Highway 29 North. The situation apparently was resolved. An officer reported he was driving the woman and infant to another home in Athens. read more
