Back to school is no fun for bullied students

It has nothing at all with victims being too thin, too fat,etc.. and everything to do with the person who is doing the bullying being mean spirited and selfish. Bullies are just jerks. A series on how to come to grips with the fact that your adorable child is really a jerk and how to handle that would be most helpful.

Tivoli, in particular, scares me. It has really become a rough neighborhood. And an eyesore.

Local restaurant holding fundraiser for Athens' couple trying to adopt Ethiopian baby

People adopt to build a family, for a lifetime - not to "help a child". There is a huge difference. What makes this baby in Ethiopia less deserving of a loving home? You really can't go down the road of picking one child over another. They are spending their own money and people are giving money of their own free will. Plenty of people spend that much on hospital costs with a birth. And the "benefit to the child" is a lifetime of belonging to a family which sounds like a bargain to me.

Bad Tidings: Georgia's bid for national title ends 5 yards short of end zone

Once again ABH - terrible headline. The only bad tidings are in this comment section. It was a great game. They fought hard and showed they were worthy to move on and win again. I am no less proud than I would have been if they had won.

Sadly, sometimes accidents just happen. It could be they were both being reasonable careful. Let's not add to the pain these people are experiencing by pointing fingers.

Åthens pastor says he received shooting threat

What would Jesus do? Jesus would offer counseling free of charge to a couple struggling in their marriage - eventhough the husband is unstable and possibly even violent. Reporting a person making a death threat to the authorities is the right (and Christian) thing to do. The man needs help. And no doubt his wife does too. What if he went home and shot his wife? I I hope this turns out for the good of all involved and that no one gets hurt.

Schools investing millions in new digital technology

I am a CCSD parent - 1 kids in elementary 1 kids in high school. I say Excellent! I'm glad to hear CCSD is keeping up. Like it or not, life as we know it is changing and technology is becoming more and more central to our daily lives. To ignore that fact and cling to "the way it always has been" is cheating out kids. Why should we send them back in time when they go to school? This is not like changing standards or some new curriculum. This is keeping pace with the real world . This will be great for our kids and our teachers! (And no $$ from staffing was used for this.) This is equipment that will be used for learning - not toys! Plus - it will allow students and teachers to being devices from home for school use which will be a money saver!

College binge drinkers happier than sober classmates, researchers say

Being "stressed" or "less happy" because you care about your grades and you are working hard to get a good education is NOT a bad thing! THAT IS CALLED LIFE! It's hard work to succeed! The purpose of college is NOT to have fun. It is to prepare you for a career.

College binge drinkers happier than sober classmates, researchers say

The headline on this article is just awful. It should say "Research shows binge drinkers have poor judgement ", which is more to the point of the study.

Kids eat more fruits and veggies under new nutrition rules

Will they "eat more" or are they just "served more"? Don't get me wrong I love the idea of healthier food. But are they tracking how much is thrown out?

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
