@E.J.: I thought the topic of oil might come up, but I don't think that's it at all. I think it is more complicated. I think we were concerned about genocide, chemical weapons, and regional stability. Iraq doesn't have a nuclear program. I realize it has been reported there were no WMD's, but Iraq did a lot of chemical weapon manufacturing. We had inspection teams that documented it, as well as imagery. Teams (soldiers) were sent to the sites to collect samples, well before the invasion. There were mass graves of animals that were used for testing.posted @ Sunday, January 5, 2014 - 21:40
After being there, I came to respect Saddam's leadership style. Those people only respond to the iron fist. Although more modern that the people in Afghanistan, they are still very primitive. Western civilized logic is not effective. Kindness is seen as weakness. It's hard for people here to understand. America's primary intent was to protect human rights. The same extremists that threaten the US, are the ones that abuse their own people.
Fear of consequences is all that keeps people in line. In America there are few consequences for low standards or selfish behavior. In the name of human rights, we are far too lenient, and more and more people take advantage of a system that is now too overwhelmed to be effective. We choose the easy wrong over the hard right.
What is better now that Iraq's military is weaker? At least before they could respond to insurgents and police their own borders. Initially we went to Afghanistan because that's where Bin Laden was. Afghanistan had no real structure, so it was the best place to organize and train terrorists.
If we have learned our lesson, we will spend the money to protect ourselves. We will strike with all our might when necessary in response to actions against us. We will seal the borders as best we can to make it as hard as possible for those who intend to do us harm. We need leaders who understand this and think of America first.
Will we ever have leaders that aren't corrupt and think of our country rather than themselves? I don't see how that is possible.posted @ Sunday, January 5, 2014 - 12:02
