What Others Say: American economy only 'mostly free' (The Augusta Chronicle)

@Eric_Stabb: I think your mistake is assuming the resident trust fund babies at the Heritage foundation used something more scientific than throwing darts at a board to choose their little top ten. That's research to conservatives.

Litch: Join Move to Amend to reclaim democracy

A union is a group of people. A corporation is a separate legal "person". Not the same thing. The individual stockholders are not liable for the actions of the corporation. Educate yourself and learn the difference.

Towery: Conservatives should support help for homeless

Conservatives will only help the homeless when the homeless can scrape together enough money to bribe them to do so. Meanwhile, they'll be more than happy to shill for trust fund babies like the Koch queens.

@SIGNOFF: What exactly is "their fair share"? Do you have a figure or percentage in mind or are you simply parroting mindless talking points? Do you pay your fair share or do you wish some to pay more so that you can pay less?

How about ending the unjustifiable income tax exemptions for capital gains dividends? Why should trust fund babies pay a lower tax rate than those of us that work for a living? Other than the fact that they can afford to bribe conservative politicians in exchange for tax cuts of course.

The Editor's Desk: Legislating religion
avenger -

Georgia should look to Oklahoma's conservative government giving the green light to the Ten Commandment monument erected on the steps of their capital because it was financed by private money. Well, Satanists now want their statue of Satan, to be financed by private money, next to the Ten Commandments.
Well, they are both from christian mythology.

'Duck Dynasty': Robertson family members ready to 'move on'
cyou299 -

is this still in the news?

why wasn't this in the news- "Marry girls when they're '15 or 16,' said 'Duck Dynasty' star Phil Robertson"

"They got to where they're getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting 'til they get to be about 20 years old before they marry 'em," Robertson says in a video clip that resurfaced Monday. "Look, you wait 'til they get to be 20 years old, the only picking that's going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They'll pick your ducks."

It was in the news, just not in the ABH for some reason. Not mentioned in this article either. Must not fit the "poor widdle persecuted conservative" theme. They love to play victim.

That's the conservative version of "less regulation" and "getting big government off your back". Enjoy!

They should have just incorporated and contributed to a few politicians. Then they would have gotten away with it scot free with a small fine and a huge bailout just like the Wall Street fraudsters did.

I am shocked, shocked I tell ya! Who would have thought putting a bunch of crooked conservative businessman (pardon the redundancy) in office would result in corruption and fraud?

Youth pot smoking rises as attitudes shift
makeitso -

As millions in the society throw away their lives in the pursuit of self gratification, this leaves the door wide open for the disciplined achievers to earn the wealth and influence this country has to offer. While the drunk and stoned sleep it off, the clear minded lay the ground work for companies and inventions. Keep smoking, then wake up in your forties and complain to your progressive Senators and Representatives how the system has been so unfair to you and demand compensation.
Are you really that naive to think that successful people don't drink or smoke pot? Silly, silly boy. You couldn't throw a rock on Wall Street without hitting a cokehead.

What Others Say: Let's move beyond education stagnation (The News-Star, Monroe, La,)
cyou299 -

@Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass: then why don't they make a show about that?

The episode I saw was quite close to a remake of the 3 Stooges. 'Let's blow up the duck stand with dynamite'. You know they're going to use too much...but it's funny anyways.

The 3 Stooges were very smart people as well. Their show was about being beyond dumb. On the one hand, pen an editorial about raising education levels...on the other cheer your residents who've made a mass consumed show about being dumb.
I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of the Duck Guys have college degrees. I know I've heard that the main guy and the crazy uncle do. So they're not dumb. They do a lot of "hicking it up" on their show as the producers request. That "reality show" is VERY scripted,.

@friendlyfire: Go to any grocery store. See those people working there? There would be fewer of them needed if less food is being purchased. SNAP money is purchasing food. Less SNAP = less food purchased. Is that really so hard to understand? Yes, SNAP creates jobs.

You and @Simple Man spouting that nonsense about corporate welfare creating jobs is insane. Jobs are created out of a need to satisfy a demand. Period. Take a macro econ class guys. This conservative claim that "if only we gift more money on corporations and the wealthy though tax cuts and cash handouts they could create the jobs they always wanted to" is such fact free nonsense it's incredible that anyone could be so dim that they would believe it.

Blog: Can we please fix the Oscars?

Summary:  Fun facts: The first-ever Oscar ceremony, held in 1929, ran a brisk 15 minutes. By contrast, the longest was in 2002, clocking in at a monstrous 4 hours and change. As usual, there are things I loved about it and things I didn't. Rather than be snarky or complain, I'll offer a few suggestions on how the organizers might bring the show into the 21st century.
