Senators ready to restore lower college loan rates

While some students take these for granted and run up huge bills, there are many others who depend on these for help. Help that the students to further their education and that will help everyone in general. The overpriced cost of going to college for an area that has rising unemployment rates as well as lower average household incomes means more students are probably going to need those loans. Loans, that should be available at lower interest rates. And they wonder why things aren't getting better. The nation as a whole is still struggling. It would also help if colleges took a hard look at how they outline courses of study and cut all the extra things that really haven't anything to do with the major sought out of the required courses. Less time taking courses that have nothing to do with the major and more time on the actual classes needed would also help. And lets not forget, the student that does manage to jump through all the hoops to graduation but does so with huge payments looming over their heads as they try to start out in their chosen career.

Despite Zimmerman trial results, Deal opposes repeal of Stand Your Ground

We have a right to arm ourselves, and protect ourselves. Law or no law, if I think my life's in danger, I'm going to defend myself. I wish those that are against the law wakes up before it's too late.

Wonder won't sing in Fla. after Zimmerman verdict

Law or no law, if I think my life's in danger, I'm going to use whatever force is necessary to protect myself. This is crazy. And while I have enjoyed his music decades ago, I think he's hurting himself. What, we're supposed to wait for law enforcement to help us? REALLY? They can't always be close enough to do you any good. I'm not taking up for Zimmerman, only the stand your ground law.

Coroner: 'Glee' actor Monteith died of overdose

I agree, they made their choice. It's just sad that once some of them discover the writing on the wall, they can't kick the habit. So sad.

EPD to conduct hearing on UGA air pollution permit

Let me guess...it usually plays out something sort of like this;

UGA getting a hand smacking, makes empty promises (on a good year), gets hit with fines and things go back to normal coal burning for UGA.

UGA gets by with pretty much whatever they want, ether by paying fines or intimidation.

Watkinsville man shoots self and another with single bullet

It's not lack of education. It's not mental derangement. It's carelessness. Plain and simple. Make sure the gun is unloaded. Never point even an empty gun at anything or one you wouldn't mind seeing shot.

Tenn camp counselor held on sex charges in Ga

Just because it is a Christian camp, doesn't mean you leave your common sense behind..I'm a Christian, but still cautious because like EJ said, they do come under the cover of the religion. It's because folks assume that it's safe, and it should be, but, that doesn't mean it always is. Folks keep your eyes and ears open.

Austell man convicted of whipping boy gets 5 years

Even if Bubba gets him once he's in jail, it can not compare to the horrible fear, confusion and pain of that little child who couldn't possibly understand what was going on. This guy needs to be put under the jail.

More rain on the way, maybe a lot

I've lived back in the woods between two swamps for close to three decades. Now when I tell folks that simply spreading gravel doesn't work, maybe they'll understand better. On the other hand, I feel for those that are having major issues because of this, I know it's a bigger pain where I live to get my car out. I do wish we'd have a couple of months break. We've not dried out all year here.

I've never had the honor of shopping at a Harris Teeter myself, but regarding Kroger or Publix, I shop both of these and love them both. I'll just be glad when the one near ATC opens so I don't have to drive thirty minutes one way to get to a decent store.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
