Rubinstein: Not profiling is foolish and dangerous

@PatrickD: You may want to do a little bit of research. I checked on this and found that the numbers don't back up your statement. A lot of it has to do with the population in a given city but by and large blacks commit the most violent crime with Hispanics second then whites.

Doctor says Oklahoma inmate suffered in execution

@snarkydude: I agree. It's time to stop screwing around with the lethal injections and go back to what works. There is no humane way to take a person's life so just do it as quickly as possible and move on to the next one.

SC bill aims to require child safety seats for motorcycles

The phrase "who in their right mind" is the reason we have many of our laws.

Georgia paying more than $40,000 to Gurley's attorney

$2 for a gallon of gas? Yes, please

@mpd0.59: This doesn't mean that low prices are here to stay. We still need the pipeline and we still need to work on other forms of energy. We need to try to be independent of other countries for our needs. We don't have many friends left in the world.

Yarbrough: Gift of friendship is always the right size

A true friend will tell you what you need to hear and not what you want to hear. And he won't care if it makes you mad. Remember he's your friend and sometimes friends have to do that.

Megathlin: Here's a question to start conversation on race

I agree that whites and blacks will never understand each other. An example.

White man to black man. "You would give ten years of your life if you could be white for one day".

Black man's reply. "If you could be black for one Saturday night you would never want to be white again".

Read the book first. I have heard that the movies leaves out a lot.

Tant: Books recommended for holiday gift-giving

@cairopilots: Thanks but what I would suggest is giving them to the Athens library or which ever one is close to you. Many times the books are placed in book sales to help raise money so they can buy new books.

We do a cleaning out every couple of years and donate boxes of books. I think some of them I bought back from the library a few times. You can also take a tax deduction for them.

UGA students to keep pushing for discussion in wake of Ferguson, New York killings

@retiredandhappy: That won't happen. That would be admitting that there are problems within the black community that can only be solved by black people working together to make their own lives and the lives of their children better.

That ain't what the good Rev. Al preaches.

'Stand with Us': Thousands protest police killings

In my bible all lives matter. Maybe Rev. Al needs to go back and read his.

Why don't these people put this much effort in stopping black on black crime? Or is this not a problem worth talking about?

Tant: Books recommended for holiday gift-giving

Being an avid reader there is nothing I enjoy better than a book as a present. Anything about the Civil War or World War II in case anyone has some books laying around taking up space that need a new home. Smile

Ambrose: More conservatives needed on college campuses

@dahreese: While you are enjoying the "fine arts" try to remember who makes your food, your clothing and your shelter. And your upscale car. I forgot about that one.

Ambrose: More conservatives needed on college campuses

There are some people that don't want our young people being exposed to religion in schools. I think being brainwashed by liberal teachers is far worse.

Carter: Advice for dealing with police

@Libralady: My comment is far more valid than anything that is found on FBNN. That's Facebook News Network.

I will give you an example. A guy came into work one day all bent out of shape because the federal government will be in charge of hunting permits starting in 2015. Nobody under the age of 21 can get a permit. People under the age of 21 will not be allowed to hunt even if they are with an adult.

I asked him where he heard this and he said that his wife read it on facebook.

I got home and did some research, that took all of about five minutes, and found out it was just another piece of facebook BS. The sad part is that he still believes it's true.

Today's editorial cartoon

This cartoon is a bit misleading. The guy on the left looks too much like the guy on the right. If the guy on the right is supposed to be white and the guy on the left is supposed to be black why wouldn't they trust each other?

They both probably have an education, live in the same neighborhood, are married and have kids. Their kids play together and go to the same private school. What's not to trust.

This does not show the type of black people that most white people don't trust. This doesn't show the type of black people that the police officers have to deal with everyday.

White culture and black culture are not the same. Neither can understand the other and that is why there will never be trust from either side.

Caterpillar exec tells lawmakers of need to teach teens about manufacturing jobs

The "soft skills" are the ones that are just as important, if not more so, than a degree from a university. If a person has these chances are they can be trained and in a few short years be more of an asset to the company.

UGA students seek real discussion on race on campus

There is a easy way to solve this problem. Don't have a lifestyle that will get you into these kind of confrontations with the police.

Don't act like a thug and chances are good that you won't be treated like one.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
