Teacher activist group sees flaws in Georgia health plan

@OCCountry: Quit your job, go rent a bunch of kids, eat junk food and stop working out. Maybe you can qualify for all the benefits that the government has to offer. This will let you complain about everything and it won't cost you a dime.

I think the name Affordable Health Care is a bit misleading. A lot of things are affordable. If you can afford them. Most of us can't.

Causey: Here's what black parents tell their sons

@cyou299: Maybe if more black parents would read this heartfelt letter and tried to pass these kind of things on to their children I, and many others that happen to live in the real world, would not make crass comments.

As far as to what my parents taught me when I was younger I can be thankful that I had parents that were there for me and loved me. And notice I said parents, As in a mother and a father.

Causey: Here's what black parents tell their sons

It would seem that there are a few other things that black parents are telling their kids. By taking to the streets rioting and looting they are also setting a fine example for them to follow.

Estrich: Blind loyalty won't help Hillary win presidency

@dahreese: LBJ said that he would have every black person in
America voting democrat for the next hundred years. Democrats have gone after the black vote for a long time and as long as they can keep buying these votes democrats will continue to be elected.

Estrich: Blind loyalty won't help Hillary win presidency

One of the down sides to Hillary running would be that too many conservatives would think that Palin would be the candidate to beat her. I think we have had too much of both of them and if either one should win it would not be good for our country.

The biggest problem I can see, but it's still early, is that America doesn't have a good choice. We need strong leadership and I don't know where it's going to come from.

I'm with dahreese, I may not vote.

Barreca: Flabbergasted by gadgets

The problem with all the gadgets that we depend on have made us forget how to do anything any more. I see too many younger people that have no idea how to work with their hands. Tools are I Pads and smart phones. Not wrenches and screwdrivers.

Madison County opens a new high school, and maybe a new learning culture

I visited the school on Thursday and I was impressed with what I saw. I hope that it will spark a new learning culture. The culture that too many of these kids come from is not one of learning. At least not learning anything worth learning.

Athens man wanted for allegedly trying to run down police officer arrested

@crissy9323: You don't need to have any sense to drive. I see people everyday that are too stupid to drive but they are still out there on the road.

The charge that will get him is the one about committing a drug offense within 1,000 ft. of the projects.

Police: Gun reported, Georgia student in custody

@Ben Had: I respond to your comments because it seems to get you a bit riled up. And I think you like the attention.

And you are right, we all love you here. I just wish the readers of the Madison County Journal felt the same way we do. But then again maybe they really do. Most of them do seem like conservatives so maybe they seem like they don't like you but deep down inside they do.

One Clarke school on state 'alert' list

@ElevatorLady: Sad but true. Sometimes children from low income families do very good in school but it's because the parents, or mother, puts the child first and does everything possible to see that their child has a chance. The biggest problem is than when a good child is placed in a classroom with kids that aren't there to learn the bad habits can rub off on them.

    No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
