Lumpkin named new chief of Savannah police

I agree with retiredandhappy/ Just because Ms. Gale went thru what she did does not qualify her for a police chief. There are many qualified candidates out there. I just hope they hire out of the department so the "good ole boys" will be out of business. Past time for Lumpkin to go.

Athens OKs Sunday voting

@mpd0.59: "It's a well known fact that Republicans governors and legislatures given the chance will suppress voter turnout, which typically reduces participation by minorities, low income households, immigrants, and young people."

That is a downright false statement...You need to read from more reputable news sources other than Mother Jones.

Athens-Clarke County could be next to OK Sunday voting

Don't tell me people can't get to the polls to vote from Oct. 13--31st or on November 4th. Sunday voting is ridiculous. If people don't care enough about the issues that to take the time to go vote during these times, then they truly are low information voters. I bet if there was a check to be picked up, they could make the time.

Police warned of retaliation following Athens shooting

"None of the people who called 911 to report the shooting incident wanted to speak with officers, police said"

What a wonderful mentality there is here. Wish they could just ignore the calls and let them implode themselves. Thank you government for this entitlement society. You have created monsters.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
