@ Snodgrass -- that's exactly what all the smoking MD's said when the smoking/cancer link was first discovered. A few cases are anecdotal, GIANT studies with significant statistical power? not so much.

Great job, Katie!!
Do NOT let these deny-er numbskulls dissuade you from an honest evaluation of the science of climate change. The evidence for global climate change and its' implications for worsening climate instability, species extinction, and huge negative effects on humanity is now OVERWHELMING.
I suggest two books if you REALLY want to learn the facts:
1. "Storms of My Grandchildren" by James Hansen, the NASA stalwart and one of the world's premier climate researchers.
2. "Last Chance: Preserving Life on Earth" by Larry Schweiger
Keep up the good work!

You have no plans to help or to employ these people, and you don't actually care if they have jobs or not.
There has never been any evidence in any of your posts that you actually care at all for human beings. Kindness and compassion are not in your vocabulary.
There are millions of people in pain, and you couldn't care less.
I pity you....
Of this there is no doubt: These Republicans are shillpuppets of their corporate owners and have no interest in job creation of ANY kind as long as Obama is POTUS. They would rather the world economy crumble than Obama be credited with ANY success.

posted @ Thursday, September 1, 2011 - 16:29@Ned and Melmarino -- there is no doubt that the black American community has been MUCH more affected by the drug "war" than other communities -- and it it not difficult to find the evidence that this is so.
This is only ONE of the many reasons to stop the war on drugs.
Others would be that by taxing and regulating these substances, billions of dollars of revenue could be generated, the [filtered word] drug dealers would be out of business, and we could begin to treat drug addicts like the patients they should be.
It's GREAT what Echols is doing -- but does he have to start the piece by knocking the people who have been touting this technology for decades?
The left-leaning environmentalists have been championing this cause for many years because they HATE fossil fuels which :
1. increase our dependency on foreign sources, many of whom are trying to destroy us, putting money directly into the pockets of our enemies
2. threaten our planet by releasing gigatons of extra carbon into the atmosphere
3. was cheap enough for decades to keep us from using our American ingenuity to develop new, clean energy sources
To the lefty environmentalists I say -- THANK YOU!
@Emma: Great job, Emma!! You are absolutely correct that there is and should be separation of church and state, and also that there cannot be a religious test to hold office in the USA.
These principles were clearly intended by the Founding Fathers and have been upheld by the Supreme Court many times.
Your level of reasoning is high -- but I do have one piece of advice: don't spend too much time debating these wingnuts, as you will end up wasting your time. Make your best argument, then get out. They will not be convinced, and you cannot force them to THINK or to CONSIDER evidence, no matter how overwhelming it may seem to you. GOOD GOING!! Keep it up!

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.
