Are you all for real? How is it possible to blame the whole of congress on the actions of a minority in office, the TPs are the root of all the failures in our congress since January.

In his actions he is a Moderate Republican. I will repeat this as much as you say he is a Socialist. Read the Communist Manifesto or Das Capital in full, then you will understand that this could never work in the actual world. Socialism is a romanticism in our times, maybe in a several generations we could be become a loving people but it does not seem that way. As long as a people wishes to live as serfs to the castle Lords then we will never be a truly free people. We are free when there is Equality, earned equality without bias. Note the 'earned equality without bias'.

ACORN? The article you referred is more about ACORN which was never a an influence other than recruiting people to vote; and when there was a discrepancy it turned out to be a Republican party intern mole. I don't understand what the accusations have to do with the death of Chavez and the truth that in action the President is a Moderate Republican. There is nothing really wrong with a social democracy at all. It did wonders for Germany in pulling out of a post war depression. It worked for America under FDR. I know you all think he was a Commie in crutches but he was an American president who saved us from a Depression, War and the shambles of previous administrations. There is nothing wrong with a return to taxation as it was before the Bush breaks for the rich. We were solvent before the war against the wrong people . National Review holds no inherent truths for me.

@RightWingExtremist: That response is further evidence of childish behavior shown here. "Prove that he isn't." Really? That's your answer to my genuine, politically aware reading of the thread? Are you so atrophied? So how is a Moderate Republican a Socialist? That was inherent in my observation on the need to pull our President into the death of Dictator. "Prove that he isn't?" Really? You just showed an empty hand. Now cut and paste as fast your fingers can...cut paste cut paste...

Seriously, you all really, truly, deeply, by definition believe in your fragile and fractured minds that our President is a Socialist? It does not matter how many times you chant the Rushnik and Foxovich phrases to change definitions and actions here, on the air and in your thoughts Moderate Republicanism is not Socialism. Discussions of the problems in Dictatorships where you continually invoke the name of Obama is completely wrong headed. But I could be wrong, the world could be flat and we are but 10,000 years old.

Good riddance to Chavez and here's to hoping that a strong democratic republic can be established for the people of Venezuela. There are too many suffering and in need for there to be so much rant about changing definitions and creating straw men.

Sock? That's funny, is it that a Rushnickism or Becknovick speak? Cute huh? Anyone can be a commie by the standards I have seen in here. Thing is the wrong people keep being called Socialists and Commies, Fascists and Dictatortots. We have a Democrat in office who is a moderate Republican and we have a Legislative branch that is certifiably insane.

I just believe that it is wrong to gang up on one man; and of course the lost hope that there could be open dialogue and honest curiosity. People kill a post by throwing in anti this and anti that crap to the point that you all look like a bunch of cut and paste junkies. It is funny.

But really, are you all so afraid of RightisWrong or anyone that posts about hope and belief in a better world that it is necessary to bring out your medieval views of the world, and post prerecorded screams from the radio and talking head TV? It is good for a chuckle most of the time. But something about today shows that there's a lot of unwarranted fear. Most of us do read the rants for a laugh, you know? As long as you guys are strapped to the keyboard and not out in the world then all is well.

I worry not about getting negged by a bunch of closed minded locals. I'll become concerned when my pit bull "Jaws" turns on me when I try to pet him.

Keep at it, RightIswrong. A dozen to one is always a good sign that you are doing the right thing. Never trust a wolf pack.

Our President is Our President. There is no other President in America. He is up against a the biggest and lousiest obstructionist Legislative branch in a good hundred years. We have the Dow at the highest in a decade, Wall Street is on fire. He is not a Socialist. He is a Capitalist and a Moderate Republican. What is it that is blinding you guys from seeing this? The rich are truly getting richer. They do not pay their fair share. \

The Boehner House, if they are not grand standing with the seemingly endless rants, they cut environmental programs, they cut education, they cut health, they are stabbing holes in the Voting Rights Act, tear away women's rights, crushed public services and openly make fun of minorities and those in our nation who need a lift up; and yet they have the constant radio, the Republican state TV at Fox and however many lunatic fringe radio personalities screaming for warfare on the lower classes in order to prop up their masters on the hill. Tea party is anti American. Israel has what amounts to a tea party government now. All of this is driven by hatred and fear. And then the reichstag pulls out another shout from Paul Ryan who must really hate his parents and anyone who has ever been injured or is near retirement.
If you all were honestly Americans you would gather together for the ONE great demand that first and foremost ALL elected officials take a pay cut and must have the same insurance as the rest of us.

Of all the "entitlements" that are the most disgusting those given to our Legislature is the ugliest. Also, all lobbying should be met with a strong and definite cap on how much it takes to buy off a Senator or Congressman, or even a few particular Supreme Court Judges obviously in the pocket of the secret hood society.

A man (RightIswrong) stands up here in what most of you wish was a gated community of like minded indentured to the wealthy. So, every time he posts about the struggle up out of a nation of inequalities, that became a great nation, ya'll find it necessary to call out the knuckleheads to fill up his posts with negs.

After 8 years of GWB (War on the wrong nation!), and 7 years of the Legislative branch destroying education, the economy, and our good will in the world there was a lot to do, so each time this is pointed out he is trolled and chained by the usual suspects until they are openly frothy and making a mockery of what should be an open debate. He is not the one made a fool by the way Rush-nicks lunge towards his posts.

State of the Union speeches are kind of like commercials or advertisements, part truth, part speculation, part cheerleading, a lot of hope and some bending of the numbers. I think we all seek to remove ourselves from falsehoods and lies, or disabuse from..... It is a choice to believe or not believe as it is a choice to be a Democrat, Republican or Independent. It is true that all State of the Union Addresses are filled with over reaching promises and proclamations, lies if you will, but that's the nature of politics in the world, ever, going back to the Greeks and beyond. Truth is that we should and must seek ways of compromise and progress to best serve the nation and the people. It is difficult to cut through the near endless red tape of All governmental bodies from City to Nation. What is good for us never seems to happen fast enough. 'Good' on the individual level moreso than on the mysterious National Debt. Taxes should be raised/returned to a more reasonable rate so that we can pay our bills and afford actual WORK in building us up to being great educators, explorers, scientists, job corps, engineers, laborers, technicians, restaurateurs, welders, electricians, builders, doctors and nurses, soldiers, bankers and investors, insurers, service industry workers, farmers, ranchers, fishermen, thinkers, peace makers, police departments, fire departments, trash collectors, oil field workers, All the people.
I'm more worried about the fact that Pakistan, North Korea (will China stand by them as their nuclear tests extend further and further?) and Iran have nuclear weapons, the Bomb, as such. If a people are so eager to blow themselves up and to destroy the lives of their own nation then what is to stop them from greater forms of destruction? This lack of respect for individual life is very telling of what plans they have for the future. I believe in all the Amendments to the Constitution as being there for all the people, without prejudice. So what are we to do? Where do we, as individuals, and as citizens, begin?
I liked all State of the Union Addresses by all our Presidents in my lifetime. It is one of the best nights of the year as far as political stumping goes, we hear it from both parties, thesis, antithesis and eventual synthesis after the lights go down. So what if Rubio sweated and the past five, if not more, presidents used teleprompters and before that they used notes! Oh no, for shame! Are y'all that petty? Look at the big picture. Do facts or the truth tell us more of the world? The fact checking done these days is a great addition to political debates, if we keep ALL of our leaders to their word, truth, then things could get better.

We are in bad shape, we are all to blame, it is not just our leaders. Our Legislative Branch has been absent from synthesis, which has been the seat of most of our problems these past 12 years. Governing is an act of compromise and of leadership. I like being an American.

Example of mistreatment of dining in downtown:
Customer with very expensive glass of single malt goes out side to smoke.
Sets glass down on table so she can stand at corner and the smoke does not interfere with diners or people entering the restaurant. On guard downtown police ticket her for open container. The officers offered the reasoning that she should have stood in restaurant doorway. Seriously. We have a very serious problem with the way downtown restaurants are treated in regards to trash, glass, open containers and the problem of where to stand when going out for a smoke. They even ticketed a cook, looking very much like a cook, sitting on the curb in the alley by the back door (game day, no room in restaurant for them to relax after work) drinking their off work beer even though they were three feet from the restaurant; meanwhile dozens of underage were entering bars on each side and all the officers did was watch.
Clarke County has consistently raised taxes on downtown businesses each year as if each one was bringing in 1998 money, and they are not. Competition has built up to an extreme status where the city takes in more money but the business takes in less because of competition, fewer customers in general, payroll increases, County Taxes, overall tax increases, all utilities have increases and yet these businesses fight to control costs and keep prices level so that the customers will return for both quality and economy. More economical use of funds by our City-County Government is essential to increasing business, beautifying downtown and setting up an overall workable downtown plan.
Don't hurt the businesses that go the extra mile for this city. Go after the real damage, not the imagined damage. I've seen downtown regulators going through garbage to make sure no food contamination is in with the cans; and if this is their extreme can you picture them walking the streets measuring 18 inches out from the surrounding curbs of each restaurant/bar? They will do this if given the chance. We need a plan, not a reaction.

Keep telling the way we (our nation, the people) grew and are, RIghtiswrong, keep it up! Don't ever let them get you down. A person trying to climb out of poverty is not a criminal. Amazing how a single shooting gathers so much declaration of pure, undiluted racism here on the boards. I didn't see a bunch of "white devil" stuff on the threads after any of the mass murders the past few years.

This is a bit off topic for this thread but here we go: I have known this family, each son and mother, for 20 years. They are open, concerned, nice and have contributed to our community as a business and as people in many ways. My own home was destroyed by fire 1988 and save for the help of a few friends and family I would have been devastated. It took over 5 years to come close to rebuilding my life. We may not be able to help everyone in need, but when we can we should help others who have experienced a home fire. It is not just the physical loss, it is the mental aspect that lingers well beyond the years. Compassion, prayers and any effort to help is all it takes. I feel for them and understand what has happened and what to expect. The last thing they need is a bunch of people arguing irrelevant aspects of their lives. How about a discussion on how to help any and all who have been harmed as such?

Contacting the Red Cross works wonders as they will help them in putting their lives back together. I learned this truth too late.
i am also trusting that the Catholic Church will be donating towards a new life for them as well. Kudos to the Savory Spoon for offering what they can offer. I think that at some point all of us who go out to eat or who have been to the Farmers Market have tasted the cakes and Columbian foods of the Villavaces family.

Expressions of legality or cutting down a family that has been harmed is pouring salt in the wounds of those already distressed. At least Think of the children before throwing stones. Y'all should be ashamed for such childish behavior (of course this only applies to those who have been immature) in being mean rather than seeking understanding and assistance.

Clayton Street early morning during the holidays. One of the most beautiful things about Athens with the Christmas lights, misty air, quiet for just a little while before the rattling of delivery trucks cracks open the day. Best relaxation moment used to be the view from bakery parking lot where the Hilton is and before the Classic Center, the little valley and the trees around the Oconee River (Creek) and up Berlin Street, trees and fog. Very calming.
Nothing politicized and nothing hated, just the way that our city had and has a beauty all it's own.

Yes! Great sounds from a great collective, DC+G. Americana is not just song stories from across the hills and back porches of the South. In many ways it includes Velvet Underground to Husker Du, Grand Funk to Wilco and this is what is accomplished on this new release. Indulge in one of the true Southern voices in a long tradition as the sea shanty gets an attitude and bad man ballads tune in to Marshall amps.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
