Heredia: Rezoning won't hurt downtown project

Jose, good for you for not being afraid to share your thoughts. I hope these nasty comments will not keep you from doing so in the future.

Everyone in this town has a right to an opinion on this issue, and they shouldn't be criticized for being brave enough to share it. If anything, we should be proud that there are young people in this town following the headlines and taking an interest.

And when a young person does decide to weigh in, maybe they should be commended instead of picked on because of their age or, heaven forbid, their name.

There is a mature and respectful way to have a discussion about this issue. This high school contributor knows that. Do the rest of you?

Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. Highlight: Would set hours of operation of each Athens-Clarke County "building campus" -- e.g. City Hall, the courthouse and Dougherty Street government building -- at 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Park hours would either be set by the Athens-Clarke County manager or the Mayor and Commission. The ordinance has been derided by members of Occupy Athens and others as seeking to enforce a curfew on public property, thus damaging their First Amendment right to peacably assemble for long-term protests. read more
