NeSmith: The perfect pen for writing The Killer's story

Curious if there's anything in the book about Jerry's ex-wives' mysterious deaths.

Massachusetts woman who stalked Spacey sentenced

What about the woman Spacey pushed in front of that subway engine? Or the congressman he poisoned with carbon monoxide? I'll wager they felt a "degree of terror."

Summer drought has Georgia farmers feeling the heat

I'm glad to see the drought getting some press, finally. Thought I was the only one who noticed that it never rains.

Yarbrough: Texting while driving is 'idiotic obsession'

I'm relieved no one here suggested positioning police snipers along roadways to shoot texting drivers caught in the act. But it's still early in the day...

Refugee group hopeful despite opposition in Athens

Don't give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Don't send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I extinguish my lamp beside the deadbolted door.

Obama to GOP: 'Stop just hating all the time'

@snarkydude: Neither you nor I have all the information one would need to govern this country. Let's be real. You have your news sources, I have mine. We're both being played, pumped with skewed "facts" that sway us one way or another. We both need to keep in mind that news agencies have become reliant on getting us to lean one way or another. There is huge profit in division! We are not really that far apart! The media as it stands depends on us disagreeing. But we're both Americans. We both want to stay here and see our country thrive! I see our president, and I don't see him as a black or white person. I think he's a regular guy, just trying to help. He's subject to all the pitfalls a political person must suffer. To get elected he had to play a warped game--but one we created. He's not perfect, but the vitriol directed at him is unprecedented--at least in my lifetime. That's why some people attribute this to his race. When people claim that he's intent on bringing this country down, it seems to many like cartoonish paranoia. What are his motives? Why would someone in his position want to be viewed historically as someone with an axe to grind, wishing only to move this very anti-Marxist country toward socialism? That's crazy! If you met him in a bar you'd most likely want to buy him a beer. He's just a guy. Not a threat to your way of life. His policies might differ from your favorite guy, but can you really claim he's setting out to sabotage our way of life? That to me seems nuts. Rush and Fox and Beck and all those reactionary Tea Party shills try to paint him as a cartoon villain, and most rational people are going to see that as crazy, or racist. He's a normal, decent guy with some faults. That's the reality, and if you insist that he's come all this way only to willfully bring us down, I think you've lost your grip on reality.

Police: Child accidentally shoots, kills playmate

With the vast amount of guns owned by people in this troubled country, some are going to end up in the hands of children. Simple math.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
