State releases school report cards; Jefferson, Madison, Oconee schools shine

@Athens Trojan: Don't think that is how it went down - and I was part of that whole mess. I believe Bethel Homes was placed in the Barrow district so that all districts would have relatively even numbers of disadvantaged children. Without Bethel in the mix over there, the demographics would be very close to the "old" Barrow - primarily white and with only a small percentage of students eligible for free and reduced lunch.

Georgia to end Medicaid payments for some early births

Excellent decision. Elective delivery before 39 weeks is not in the best interest of the child and ACOG (the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) is moving to eliminate them. Things have changed even in the last few years regarding this. I have a friend who was induced at 38 weeks years ago and was just induced this time at 39 weeks - doctor would do no earlier.

Of course, this would not cover medically indicated deliveries - just elective ones (for the convenience/comfort of the mother or doctor generally). . .

Brunswick woman says she's certain suspect shot her baby

What kind of scumbag relative provides a fake alibi for a kid who shot a baby in a stroller . . . obviously I don't know but if she is lying she needs some sort of charges brought against her!

Elderly Athens woman found living in squalor

The waste cited above is very disturbing. If it is happening in one department in the ACC, it is likely happening in all. We need someone to sharpen their pencil and cut all this waste. And deduct these nutso charges from the employee's paycheck when they are inappropriate or questionable. That would put a stop to it, quick.

R.E.M. manager Downs reflects on career, looks forward on public education

@nowheregirl: Perhaps a little over enthusiastic Wink. It is just so NICE to see someone like him supporting the CCSD. There are many good, smart parents who have actively chosen to send their kids to the CCSD rather than move to the OC or send their kids to private school. . .

Many of us with actual experience in the schools think they are great!

Athens mom points gun at soldier son

@CharlotteLadyGardner: It is hardly a secret. I heard about it at a meeting last night - no AA folks.

And your response is *slightly* scary . . . relax much?

@environmentalist: I think picking up a gun after you have had something to drink is a bad idea,- particularly if you plan on just "waiving it around.". I thought one of the first rules of responsible gun ownership is not to get it out unless you intend to use it. Perhaps a call to the police was in order before it escalated to waiving guns around.

And to the contrary, what a teacher does in their own home is most certainly the parents' concern - or at least it can be depending on what the issue is! That may be the dumbest "blanket" statement I have ever heard. . .

Also Athens Academy has taken very quick and decisive action on this which I presume they would do if any faculty member was charged with aggravated assault. Ms. Boyd is an award winning teacher and hopefully this will be resolved quickly.

Two pedestrians hit by vehicle on Milledge Avenue

Just FYI. I am familiar with crosswalk safety because of my involvement in the Safe Routes to School effort. Mid block crosswalks and crosswalks not at intersections are very dangerous. The crosswalks on Milledge are at intersections. Putting a crosswalk mid block or at a street which is not a two way intersection is very dangerous. I have had a conversation with my boys about crossing at intersections and how to never cross where there is not a crosswalk. Lesson learned. Not excusing the speeding in the center lane but pedestrian safety is SO important.

@anonymous1: Wow. That tells you something, doesn't it!

If he turned into the lane too early and was surprised by them - one thing. If he refused a sobriety test, he was obviously impaired (drug/alcohol). At 4:45 in the afternoon. Throw the book at him.

Retailers ink deals for Epps Bridge Centre
snarkydude - As far as "higher end stores", you don't have the demographics here to support them.
I am not talking Neiman Marcus. I am talking stores of the caliber as those at Beechwood - Talbots, Coldwater Creek, Rolling Pin, Ann Taylor Loft, Chico's, Jos A Banks, etc.

This Oconee mall is shaping up to be discount city . . .

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
