Too bad there aren't any more Dr. Walter Allen around. Everyone respected him and he spoke his mind. He use to actually drive students to colleges and get them enrolled. Although much appreciated by the community, he was never given credit by the BOE. Why is no school named after him?

@crazy8golfer: There are many black men that know right from wrong and do positive things for the community. Unfortunately, many of their deeds go unnoticed by the media, therefore also the community. So all you read about are the ones that commit crimes. No, I don't consider your comment rascist, but unfortunately, uninformed.

ABH, do you ever enforce this or are you just covering your A$$es? Sounds racist to me.

Let me make sure I'm clear, if a person had $0 income for the entire year, then they cannot earn EIC. Unless they file jointly with a spouse that did have income.

@shrapnel: Shrapnel, this is incorrect!! You cannot have $0 income and receive EIC or even claim kids. Go check with a tax preparer.
JackRabbit - Of course Fairley is foregoing his senior season. Staying in college would mean he has to study. And after hearing him speak after Auburn's win last Monday, it is clear that academics are not his strong point. I hope he gets a fantastic financial advisor because this dude is D-U-M-B.
But yet Auburn and other major universities pimp players like him to bring in the $$$$$. He's just returning the favor to get some $$$ of his own. Sounds smart to me.

I played little league baseball with him and his younger brother over at the old Moose Field. This indeed is sad.

@jawjad: Let me guess, that's what you heard right? You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. As Artemis4951 said, that is very illegal. If you would only take time to look up statistics before you started typing you would sound more intelligent than you are.

@The Oracle of the Athens Banner Herald: I believe she runs the after hours tutoring program for the school district. I know she works at the Mitchell Bridge location.

@fatdawg: I do agree that this business has been in the news quite a few times for fighting. However, we don't know that the club sold the kids alcohol. With a kid out in the parking lot with a bottle of vodka, my guess is that bottle came from somewhere else. Nonetheless, this club probably needs to be shut down because obviously, they can't control their patrons (if that's what you want to call them).

I thought this team might challenge the 1985 squad as the best ever. Would've been hard to do anyway, but I guess not. Keep your heads up Glads.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but these statistics are based on SENIORS that took the SAT between Oct. 2009-June 2010, correct? Why aren't the scores for Juniors counted. My point is this, last year my neighbor put his son in a weekend SAT class at Cedar Shoals that Kaplan ran. He was a Junior las year and the class was preparing students for the Dec. 2009 exam. His score jumped over 300 points. That's not what amazed me, whatt did was the unusual number of Seniors in the class that had never taken the SAT, according to my neighbor's son. If anyone reading this knows alot about college admissions, isn't waiting until December of your senior year to take the test just about too late? Does it still take about a month to even get the score back? I graduated from high school in the 80's and we were encouraged to take the SAT at the latest during our junior year. Am I the only one that finds that a little bit odd?

@iluvathens: 1inthe stink is correct, I hate to admit it but he's absolutely correct and I'm a black male. Rarely do you see black on black capital crimes tried with the death penalty. Indeed, had the victim been white.........another story. Look at the story involving Lisa Davenport ( the lady that was set on fire by her ex). He will not get the death penalty. Was he not allowed to plea out? I don't like it anymore than you but "it is what it is"

The biggest problem is that some parents allow students to wait until their senior year to take either the SAT or ACT. They are already behind the 8ball then. Both test are about so much more than content. There is a strategy involved in order to be successful. I enrolled my son in a Kaplan tutoring program a couple of years ago and boy did it pay off. I was totally amazed at the differnce it made in his score. Naturally, he had to do the work (there's no magic dust). He is on a full academic scholarship at "The U".(That's Miami). The tutoring does cost a pretty penny, but my child is worth the "investment".

@keepitsimple: Interesting, I often don't find the jokes that obvious. All the same, some "jokes" can be perceived as hateful. No problem, I make jokes myself, I just tend not to make them racial or religious based.

Good info GaPeach. I received and new debit card in the mail a year ago and forgot to activate it while in Athens. I travelled to Augusta and the card obviously didn't work. Glad there was an Augusta First B&T and I saw that Synovous symbol and was able to get everything taken care of.

Probably the same reason they let many others on here post. Sure, the comments are racist but many of you post the same type of comments and you rewrd each other for the posts. You make fun of people's names, where they live, and the list goes on. Yep, " a hit dog will holler".

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
