No notice of school closures for Athens area

Left off Madison County and some of the area private schools AGAIN. Madison County shares a border, I can't figure out why the paper leaves them out every time.........

Audit: Ga. Dept. of Ag failed to use E-Verify

Typo in 3rd paragraph, first sentence. "suing" should be "using." Associated Press needs to work on their proofreading!

Vision Video to close flagship Broad St. location

My husband asked about this when he stopped in today, the worker said they asked OnlineAthens not to say anything. Good job there. He said they won't know until next week what is going to happen.

Wanted man caught urinating on downtown Athens building

@mkultra27: I've seen something like that before in vacation centered cities. You pay and get 2 minutes. If you are there longer you have to pay to leave too!

Australian DJs apologize for royal hoax call

People are calling for the DJs to be held responsible for the suicide. You can't blame them for something SHE did!
I agree with Fish, this woman would (probably) not have done this on the prank call alone. I feel sorry for the children she left behind, especially if it turns out it was all due to the prank.

All Gainesville city schools to get gas detectors

@Bklyngal2Athens: It is not a state requirement, most schools don't have them. :/

Unique Eats: George's Lowcountry Table

The food at this place is not good, especially for what they charge for it. My husband and I couldn't wait to get out of there!

No cursing in class

"Bawk, bawk, bawk" is an example of fowl language. I'm not sure that would get a teacher fined.
Now if you are talking about foul language, then this post makes more sense.

Madison taps new schools superintendent

This was actually approved/announced last week, don't know why they waited until now to write about it!

Looking forward to many great years with Dr. McCannon at the helm, he is a great leader and, because he has held so many positions, will make sure everyone is treated fairly!

Death toll close to 300 as tornadoes devastate South

My sister was in Americus GA a few years back when they had a similar situation with several tornadoes. When visited by higher ups (Can't even remember who now), she said they shut down the ONLY usable road for security.....She was not impressed

Light turnout expected in handful of elections

Actually the Madison Co. one is not a new tax, it is a continuation of a previously existing tax. If it is not approved then property taxes will go up. I prefer supporting the school system with a small tax than raising property taxes!

Money-laden purse ripped off from car

@mcudab: I agree! I think the worst is at restaurants when people hang their purses off the back of their chair. Then the person is free to steal their wallet but leave the purse and leave the person unaware until it is too late to do anything.

I do feel sorry for this lady though, she did make an effort to hide it. Sneaky teens were probably watching as soon as she showed up!

New mayor sick, misses swearing-in

Bad choice of picture with that title. It would have been a good picture with another article, or even as the smaller picture in this article instead of the main one.

Change under way at Fowler

I agree with rcbljc, the teachers have enough to do just coming back from a break, now they can add setting up their classrooms to the meetings, planning, and the like.

Blog: Can we please fix the Oscars?

Summary:  Fun facts: The first-ever Oscar ceremony, held in 1929, ran a brisk 15 minutes. By contrast, the longest was in 2002, clocking in at a monstrous 4 hours and change. As usual, there are things I loved about it and things I didn't. Rather than be snarky or complain, I'll offer a few suggestions on how the organizers might bring the show into the 21st century. Winter storm drama

Athens-Clarke County police officers responded to Pinewood Estates North on a 911 call concerning a heated domestic dispute. it reportedly was an argument over the lack of heat and food in a family's trailer and a woman was threatening to stab anyone who tried to take away her 7-month-old child. State patrol responded also, from their post nearby on U.S. Highway 29 North. The situation apparently was resolved. An officer reported he was driving the woman and infant to another home in Athens. read more
