Having a backyard coop can be heart-breaking also...be careful of predators....you will be surprised who will be attracted to the flock....
Raccoons Possums Foxes Coyotes Hawks Snakes Cats Dogs
I have lost chickens to most of the above listed predators.....make sure that the night-time coop is like a fortress.....they are sneaky, those predators, i.e. a raccoon will reach through chicken wire and grab a bird from underneath or sides of the cage, pull a wing off in no time. Possums pry at doors to get in, etc.....
Learn from my mistakes....build a sturdy coop with no way for a killer to get in....posted @ Sunday, August 25, 2013 - 12:05

Athens-Clarke County police officers responded to Pinewood Estates North on a 911 call concerning a heated domestic dispute. it reportedly was an argument over the lack of heat and food in a family's trailer and a woman was threatening to stab anyone who tried to take away her 7-month-old child. State patrol responded also, from their post nearby on U.S. Highway 29 North. The situation apparently was resolved. An officer reported he was driving the woman and infant to another home in Athens. read more
