Unfortunately this shelter has the reputation of high kill. People do not realize the impact of not having their pets spayed/neutered, going to breeders instead of rescue groups or shelters to find a pet or deciding they are moving/having a baby/whatever else has on the animal and on the taxpayers. It's more cost effective for shelter to euthanize than to house. As a staunch animal advocate (who for the record before someone starts bashing me on here, does also not eat any type of meat/fish/pork/chicken nor wear any type of animal skin (leather, fur, etc) I am thrilled to see more media attention being given to the stresses and over population and dumping of animals in our society. As with many things in our culture today, we have, in my humble opinion, become too much into "throw away" - of marriages, jobs, children, elderly parents, animals, etc. I am hoping personal accountability and common sense makes a come back one day but I'm not holding my breath.
posted @ Monday, May 21, 2012 - 05:18@riff-raff: Why do you think? Because people would be allll over the officers who arrested him screaming police brutality.
I too think he should've taken the llonnngg way to jail though but the reality is the officers had to behave professionally - even with this POS.
I can only hope once he hits the state prison he will get what he deserves a 100 fold.
They are allowing this murderer WAY too much control. What a coward Hood is and those that are allowing him to turn this into a circus to avoid trial are no better. When will the judges and attorneys think about the victims family and stop acting afraid of this POS? When will they think of Officer Howard and his family and the daily struggles they are going through? Hood needs to be told to sit down, shut up and take what he has coming to him. If he wants to scream racism, sexism or any other "ism" let him just get this trial going so the families can at least try and move on from this part of the tragedy.

posted @ Saturday, April 7, 2012 - 06:58Cannot say enough good things about the Vet school..we have used them on several occasions - including a few emergencies - for large and small animals. The staff, Vets and students have been nothing but professional, competent, compassionate, responsive and caring. Highly recommend the Vet school (and no, I'm not related to anyone there nor am I a UGA alum).
posted @ Saturday, April 7, 2012 - 06:57@Janet Fugett: Hmm...well, Clarke Co. has SRO in their schools and look at the problems that continue to plague the schools there....fights in school have always happened and will continue to happen...it's one of those facts of life parents, teachers and students have to deal with from time to time. For argument sake, let's say an SRO is placed in the OC schools...where is the money for the officer going to come from? How would you divide the officers time between schools? Would you want an officer in each school? That is more money and resources than reasonable given the size of OC. How bout just let the school, parents and teachers handle situations as they arise, as they are doing? Given the high ranking of the OC schools in the state and the success rate of the students after the graduate, it seems OC schools are doing just fine.
posted @ Saturday, March 10, 2012 - 09:48@AthenianDawg: Do you really think someone with limited experience Mr. Downs has will beat out a long seated, success proven Sheriff? Will not happen. Mr. Downs cannot explain in any detail is plans for the county...the sentences on his Facebook election page and in his interviews are "unicorns and rainbows" in "I am with you and for you" - WTH does that mean? He says he wants to take the county in a new direction - what direction? He has skipped around in jobs in his own department - you can look at that like he is trying to gain experience or you can view it as he can't stay in one job long for whatever reason..sorry, no vote for him here - too inexperienced and too much "fluffy" talk.
posted @ Friday, March 9, 2012 - 10:04@1inthestink: I think I may know who you are...I have an idea anyway..and if I'm correct, you are not one to point the finger at anyone else for having a family member that has and has had run ins with the law...and when I said you seem to be either a disgruntled former employee or a former "guest" of the county, I now lean toward the former employee...
I, along with many others on here, certainly feel horrible for the children who were exploited - of course - but does that not mean we cannot feel badly for the Sheriff and his family? There were many victims in this case - why does compassion for the children mean we cannot feel compassion for the others who were hurt by this man?
Everyone on here knows you have a personal chip w/the Sheriff and some of those employed by him. We get it.
@Walholler: It was in the paper...search the archives for it and Sheriff Berry also posted on his Facebook page re: the incident.
posted @ Thursday, March 8, 2012 - 17:41@1inthestink: you sound more like a disgruntled former employee (which I suspect is closer to the truth) or possibly a former "guest" of the county with a large chip on your shoulder than someone who really cares about the law enforcement of OC. Your comments are obvious in their personal dislike of those you mention - which is your right of course - but I don't think your opinons are going to sway anyone to vote against Sheriff Berry for for Trey Downs - at least I hope not. Voting needs to be based on experience, proven leadership, maturity, etc. There is no way I would EVER vote for someone with as little and as inconsistent experience as Mr. Downs has..he says the same things over and over and makes states like "I will be there with you and for you" - something like that - which makes no sense and he has yet, that I have heard or read, say/write anything concrete as to his plan of change.
As far as the Sheriff's brother, every family has problems and he handled it to the point he could and I feel certain will continue to do so. You are just trying to mud sling and insinuate things that are not based in fact.
Regardless of who you vote for, please just vote. In all the drama of the politics we, in American, tend to forget we are free to debate, talk about the candidates, disagree about the candidates and to simply walk in and vote - unlike many other places in the world..so out of respect for those who have fought and continue to fight to keep our country and our freedoms going - as tattered as they may be right now - take the 30 min or the hour and exercise your right to vote.

posted @ Friday, March 2, 2012 - 10:32Life deals some HARD blows to people...we look at some and wonder why they made the choice they made but we ALL deal with our wounds, failures and disappointments in different ways..some drink, some do drugs, some sleep around, some shop, etc. but we ALL numb our pain in one way or another at one time or another..short term or long term...I am NOT advocating illegal drug use..or any of the other things I've mentioned, but what I am saying is...we did not live this young mans life...I'm sure his family and friends have gone over in their minds and with each other millions of times what they may have done to stop this tragedy...his decision to go there looking for drugs that night...but the bottom line is, that is a question that will never be answered...making drugs legal or keeping them illegal, going to public or private school...isn't the issue here...I don't know...it's a tragedy that has become all too common in our society and I don't know what the answer is - NONE of us on here do..but, like others on here, I wish the family well in getting through this to the point they can.

Maybe in the upcoming election we will get one.
posted @ Thursday, February 23, 2012 - 19:15LawPatrol and Anonymous Dude...I'm sure this is a waste of my time asking..but..do either of you EVER support ANYTHING law enforcement does? And if you really think they are all the things you says they are or lack all of the qualities you think they should have..why don't you two get off your own @$$ and join the law enforcement community? You would have the means to try and change the things you don't care for...you could become an attorney..a judge and work toward changing laws...you seem to forget the law enforcement officers don't make the laws...they enforce them so until those laws - like pot being illegal - are changed - the officers should and will continue to do their jobs..but I guess that just gives you two more to [filtered word] about.

This has nothing to do with the color of his skin - as everyone on here knows POS come in ALL races....

Over the past few weeks I've noticed a change to the ATM I visit on West Broad in front of Five Guys. It's a Bank of America ATM and the main reason I like it is because there is only a $2 fee to use it. The last few times I visited the ATM, I put my card in the slot and the ATM immediatley gave me the card back. I was a little alarmed at first and tried to put the card back in but the screen prompted me to input my PIN number instead. I was able to complete my transaction but it threw me out of my comfort zone. read more
