Court dismisses 1,800 when police fail to show up

I wonder what the count is in Athens-Clarke County, especially since one the findings of the 2010 Overview Commission (appointed by the Grand Jury) was that the Sheriff had approx. 4,000 unserved warrants.
ElevatorLady - Wow. That takes an impressive amount of determination and grit.
She is an inspiration.

I agree and it also takes an impressive amount of money. The cost of the test, which is elective thus not covered by insurance, is out of reach for most of us. (At least it was for me a few years back.)

Athens man learns jury duty not just civic duty, but the law

I believe deputies are sent out by the sheriff, not a judge. I honestly forgot to show up for jury duty one time & it was the sheriff who called me at work & said, "Ahem, do you know why your name is on my desk this morning?" Nobody had to send a deputy for me, I couldn't get there fast enough.

Burglars stealing TVs at Athens homes

I would rather the victim's occupation be kept out of the news than the crime location, i.e. I don't care where you work but I care very much if a crime has been committed near me.

Canada ambassador says he feels slighted by "Argo"

I read that Affleck has added a statement to the credits at the beginning that highlights the Canadian Ambassador's contribution and thanks him. If he wins an Oscar, it will be for his own work as a filmmaker. He doesn't need to be told what to say or who to thank.

Man freed from Phipps Plaza escalator in lengthy rescue effort

Everyone should know there is an emergency shut-off button under the handrail at the bottom of escalators.

After Crocs shoes became so popular for children there were warnings about their rubbery material being easily caught by escalators & feet mangled because, unlike flip-flops, Crocs have a strap around the heel.

Outdoor movie viewing leads to noise citation

If this problem had not existed for so many years, all over ACC, no ordinance would have been necessary. Thank goodness homeowners now have some recourse -- I used to knock on my party neighbor's door and get him up every morning at my appointed time of departure for school and work. About the 3rd time when he chewed me out, I smiled and said, "Backatcha, Buddy!"

Reasoning in these situations usually does not work. Anyone who is reasonable cuts out their noise and does not repeat the offense. The majority want to party LOUD and that is all that matters to them. They absolutely do not care if their partying keeps the neighbors' new baby from sleeping, or robs school-age children and parents of all but a couple of hours of sleep. Nobody has a right to do that.

Ex-House speaker accused of having gun at airport

IF (BIG "IF") the 'oops-I-didn't-know-the-gun-was-in-the-bag' story is true -- which I'm not buying because the gun was partially visible to TSA -- then he should be in bigger trouble for being so irresponsible as to own a gun and not have a clue about its location. How long had it been laying around his house in that bag, accessible to grandchildren, thieves, etc?

Pop Addict Book Review: "Facing the Music and Living to Talk About It" by Nick Carter

As a huge Backstreet Boys fan, I was little perplexed on reading Nick Carter?s book.  It?s not like reading a book about Elvis Presley or The Beatles. I didn?t live through those moments. I didn?t see them in person. But as someone who has followed Nick?s career since I became a fan in 1998, not just in the Backstreet Boys, but as a solo artist, I?ve always thought we had a lot in common besides being the same age. read more

Links to Banner-Herald's award-winning sports stories

The Athens Banner-Herald sports staff combined to win 11 individual awards on Sunday at the Georgia Sports Writers Association's annual meeting in Marietta. You can get a few more details on that in this story ? "Banner-Herald sports staff wins 11 awards" ? and I thought I'd provide some links to the winning stories for the curious. The awards were for the sports staff's work in 2012. read more
