Might as well just make college football a non-contact sport.

Halloween isn't illegal in Athens yet? Isn't this considered a culturally insensitive holiday? All the schools up north are banning it.

Nice to see dorm rooms are about as safe as Rocksprings B-Ball courts. Looks like Obama's plans are working as intended.

I thought this would be another one of those suits where an employer was "wrong" for not filling 75% of their positions with an ethnic group that makes up 12% of the population.
friendlyfire - Obama was "Johnny-on-the-spot" for black professor and Trayvon Martin, but he has remained silent on the brutal beating of the white special education student by three black boys on the bus, the shooting of the Brunswick baby between the eyes by a young black male, the shooting of the Australian baseball player in Texas by black and Hispanic youths, and now this 88 year old beating by two black youths. What's up?
If you read his books, you will gain quite a bit of insight into Obama's opinion of white culture, white people, and whiteness in general (to put it nicely, he's not a fan). I'm more shocked that people are surprised by all this than I am at Obama's behavior.

Is "random" the AP's code word for "racially motivated black on white hate crime"?

This isn't a gun problem nor is it a video game problem. Judging from the comments, it appears more people are figuring it out.
tbirds - Some of you are saying that Trayvon should have ran. REALLY? Do you realize how many bullets Zimmerman would have put in Trayvon if he had ran? Then your question would be " If he was'nt doing anything wrong, why did he run? You ask why did'nt he dial 911, why did'nt he run to a neighbor's house?Your question should be "Why did Zimmerman continue to follow Treyvon when he was told not to"?
I won't say he should have ran, but attacking, straddling, head slamming, and the ol "Your gonna die tonight mfer" clearly wasn't the best set moves. Maybe he could have just casually walked home. He would have made it there eventually, even though it takes him 40 minutes to move one mile in the dark in the rain in and among the houses. I see that sort of thing with black youth in my own neighborhood, except they wear backpacks at 10PM and the next morning my GPS has gone missing from my car.

The demographics of racist lynch mobs sure have changed over the years. They are even led by a racist president now.

@catman:
It doesn't matter if you "start it". If the other person escalates it to the point where you need to defend your life, who started it becomes irrelevant.

It's a moot point anyway because a neighborhood watchman in his own neighborhood following a guy in his thug uniform doesn't equate to "starting it".

Are you saying the legislature won't undo natural law in the face of hate-filled racist lynch mobs out for Zimmerman's head? I'm not so confident in our government.

Regardless of the state of the law, you can be sure people will keep on defending their lives and those of their family members and friends in the face of violent thuggish assailants, even if the assailant is black.

Take Nicki Minaj off TV and put her in a zoo where she belongs. It's win/win, people can still gawk at her and she can still get attention.
antiBen - @Lady of the Lake: I strongly disagree. Yes she did something stupid and looked like an idiot, but her prompt and sincere apology was classy by Hollywood standards.

Chances are her PR people wrote and released that "apology" for her because she got busted, the press picked it up, and they had to start damage control.

Since when is a black man in America capable of anything racist?

Ah, thank goodness for Leighton Jordan. Meanwhile, numerous young women were spotted vomiting in the streets of downtown Athens last weekend and screaming "wooooooo!"

In other news, Mr. Georgia came out to discuss image problems among male youths in America, steroids, wasting way too much time in the gym, bad tattoos, horrible haircuts, fake tanning, skin cancer, liver damage, blah blah blah. When asked for comment, members of the public said "What? Mr. Georgia? What is Mr. Georgia?"

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
