Technically the proclamation had no teeth since the Federal government had no jurisdiction in the South. It was window dressing on Lincoln's part to try to gain support for the war.

posted @ Wednesday, May 2, 2012 - 09:39It is amazing that some people think that being progressive is being allowed (with government protection) to kill innocent children. That is barbaric in the worst sense of the word. Our country continues to slide into the pit as our government continues to legislate immorality. No civilization has ever survived that turned a blind eye to and encouraged and mandated immoral behavior.

Don't change the law that is designed to protect citizens from attack. A terrible tragedy in Florida, yes, but it is like cutting your nose off to spite your face if they want the law changed because of an isolated incident.

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.
