@Abc: Many people attempt to equate driving a car to gun ownership though the comparison is ridiculous. The individual right observed and protected by the Second Amendment precludes the idea that one must have the government's permission to own a firearm. There is no such provision that guarantees anyone's right to operate a motor vehicle on a government owned roadway. As for requiring a year long wait for 15 year olds to operate an automobile on their own, would you be okay with allowing a year wait for the same age group to purchase and carry a firearm? If onerous regulations are okay for the Second Amendment, are they likewise acceptable for the First, Fourth and Fifth as well?
posted @ Friday, May 24, 2013 - 09:24I have a number of friends and relatives in the Boston area with a few residing in Watertown. One of those is currently attempting to navigate the onerous regulations in MA to obtain a carry permit for self protection. She expressed to me during the manhunt that she felt less safe knowing that most of her neighbors were unarmed and therefore completely dependent on others for their security. The argument of stricter gun laws making the people of MA safer is absurd. If there were any substance to it, Chicago would be one of the safest locales in the US. As for MA being 49th in the nation for gun violence, I can only assume that Wise is using the Brady Campaign's ratings as anyone who looks at the FBI Uniform Crime Reports will see that claim to be false.
posted @ Friday, May 24, 2013 - 07:07Thank goodness Great Britain has gone to extrordinary lengths to disarm it's law abiding citizens, otherwise someone might have intervened to stop the attack and possibly saved the victim's life. It is exactly what leftists want to do in America.

That is your opinion, it is not substantiated by fact.

You are incorrect. Noted criminologist Gary Kleck did an extensive study among inmates in Florida that revealed the vast majority were fearful of armed citizens and most avoided targeting persons and places where they felt the likelihood of an armed person was high.

posted @ Sunday, May 19, 2013 - 17:11“That’s why I call them groups". You call them groups because you've been told by the police chief as well as the mayor, commission and business community not to use the word 'gang' lest it taint the reputation of Athens as a progressive community. You can't wish it away and giving the violent offenders probation doesn't improve the situation. The 'leadership' will hope against hope that the truth doesn't get out and eventually it will cost someone a life.

posted @ Thursday, May 16, 2013 - 15:24Great idea, I'm sure the empty and dilapidated building provides more jobs and tax revenue than a firing range and retail store would bring. When you consider the code requirements for opening and insuring an indoor range, it is clear that the business owners were willing to invest a great deal of money in the project. Hopefully, a more intelligent governing authority in another metro area will take advantage of the opportunity to welcome a new business venture.

posted @ Sunday, May 12, 2013 - 08:13Interestingly, the FBI uniform crime reports also show higher than normal gun crime rates in those jurisdictions with the most restrictive laws concerning ownership and carrying. Politicians and the media have been trying to convince the American people that gun violence is increasing. The truth convinces me that the gun control crowd and their media lapdogs are the true enemies of the people.

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.
