I think it's time that all choirs who want to sing religious songs in government venues learn some Jewish religious songs, Hindu religious songs, Muslim religious songs, Buddhist songs, etc.

Bless you Mr. Mauldin for helping so many children learn to read and love books. In our school, the brown birds were the slow group and I was a brown bird. I still remember the humiliation. Funny how things turn out. I'm the only one in that class to earn advanced degrees and I ended up working with books my whole life.

@Joe Johnson: I was actually trying to give him a break as it means "death to cops" in France. But I doubt he is Hispanic or French.

@Bishop59: This is what the three dots mean:
The dots represent that you have earned your keep in your gang. The three dots would represent the 13 of the southern gangs and the same for the northern gangs with four dots : for 14.

@Stinky_Dawg_Luvin: People in clinical depression are not logical. Ask anyone who has been there or family of the clinically depressed. It is a PAINFUL, dark place. One is not just sad. He/she is in deep agony and pain that won't go away. Professional help sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

I've never understood why 60 Minutes hired and continued to use Lara Logan. She is such an obvious fake and puts on an overly-sympathetic tone when interviewing her guests. She is/was such a transparent panderer.

@truth: OMG, what kind of world do you live in? You really think that kid reads the Banner-Herald or any newspaper? Do you actually think the media should filter stories and toss out those that might offend someone? Most all news is to some degree "sensational" just due to the nature of "news."

“We will take the war to the liberal Democrats.”

Once again the Republicans miss an opportunity to say anything relevant to the needs of our country. All they seem interested in is being adversarial toward the Democrats. They waste all their time and energy on blocking every idea the Democrats have, but they know neither how to offer their own solutions nor how to compromise. As I've said before on here, I'm an Independent and have voted both ways. I voted for Bush 43 for his first term. But I'm growing weary with the deadlock the Republicans continue to cause. PROPOSE SOMETHING POSITIVE, or compromise, or sit down and shut up.

@Pfunk: Absolutely true. But you should care if he is a liar or not. Of if he uses public funds for his pleasure.

@nationalchamp1988: Think about it, National Champ. The Democrats never espoused FAMILY VALUES every other breath and then did stuff like Sanford. It's not so much the deeds but the HYPOCRISY that is in debate here. He is obviously a panderer. Kinda sad that so many people have fallen for his "grace" statements. Kinda sad the Rs have no one better to offer up as a public servant and now the whole state is going to be represented by a liar, a cheat, and a panderer. What a joke. And, no, I'm not a Dem. I'm an independent and have voted both ways depending on whom I thought was the better candidate and I certainly would never have voted for Sanford. What an embarrassment for the State of South Carolina

@mpd0.59: I'm not normally a conspiracy suspicious person but I'm old enough to remember the swine flu vaccine debacle. And I'm not saying this year's vaccine gave anyone flu. I'm just saying I can't find stats that you are any better off if you do or if you don't. I want to know, in each demographic, what percent of the people ended up with flu even after the vaccine compared with the percentage of people who didn't get the vaccine. I'm saying that stat is necessary to know if the CDC is being open an above board. I do feel that one of the big players in our national and world economy is the pharmaceutical business. And they are big enough to create fear in the world.

posted @ Friday, February 22, 2013 - 19:26

OK. In order to be a valid statistic, they need to compare it to people (same age) who didn't get the flu shot. I would bet that a larger percentage of people who got the vaccine ended up getting the flu than people who did not get the vaccine. I cannot find stats on that.

@RightWingExtremist: I'm sure he has experience with a checkbook writing all those alimony and child support checks. He's kinda free-wheeling with his own money so why should I think he'd be any different with our tax money.

@Ross: But Pelosi is smart enough to know that evolution has been proved by scientists all over the world. I just don't know how anyone can trust Broun since he obviously panders. Who knows what group can get his support on crazy issues. He has no rank or respect in Congress. The R's are scared of him and what he (among others) is doing to destroy what was once a vital, sane, respected party--one whose members not so long ago believed in doing what was right for the nation rather than what is right for the party.

It's crazy when people begin to use false email stats aimed at the wingnuts as valid stats. Go to the FBI site to get the correct info. This legislator is a wingnut and it's an embarrassment to our state that people like this get elected. He doesn't even know where to find the facts. He gets all his info from biased talk shows and emails. I think you should be able to pass an IQ test before running for office.
friendlyfire - The budget cuts aren't really cuts. They are only refusing to allow the budgets to increase.

This isn't true. Every person who works for the government has been told to prepare for furloughs. Furloughs mean more foreclosures and the worse crash of the housing market that we have ever seen. Across the board cuts will be the death knell to our struggling economy and will be devastating to everyone--not just government workers.

I can remember when I would often vote for a Republican if I thought he was the best candidate. But it's been about 25 years since that has happened. Oh wait. Isn't that how long Rush's entertainment show has turned the GOP into a bunch of brainwashed paranoids. Then along came the Tea Party that made a bad problem worse. The GOP hasn't proffered many viable, functioning, sane candidates in a long time. So many of the GOP candidates and elected officials just pander to the wing nuts. That's really sad because it limits our choices and it's sad to see the Grand Old Party die by its own hands. They say they stand for family values but they worship at the feet of Rush with his drug habit and multiple marriages--likewise Broun with this multiple marriages. That doesn't necessarily make him a bad person but it makes him a hypocrite along with all of the people who vote for him. Wake up GOP guys. Fix your party before it's too late.

I loved Bucky. I first met him in 1967 and discovered that day that you will never have go guess where you stand with him or how he felt on an issue. He was an amazing man. I've never met anyone else like him. My sympathy to his family and friends.

Gracious. I've heard of it but vaguely. Thought it was on the grounds of Westfield Academy in Perry. But looking on a map, I don't see a much more isolated area of the state unless it's Billy's Island in the Okefenokee. It definitely should be moved to a more urban area if supporters can raise the money. Macon would be even more accessible.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
