Pfunk - I'm still confused as to why a plant that God put here can be illegal. Why do so many conservatives want one of God's creations to be outlawed.

Murder, and rape are also creations of God.. So with your logic they should be legal..
kemosabe - fascist running the state of Georgia give
So you even know what the word fascist means.. ?? Because.. I do not think it means what you think it means..
One common definition of fascism focuses on three concepts: the fascist negations of anti-liberalism, anti-communism and anti-conservatism; nationalist authoritarian goals of creating a regulated economic structure to transform social relations within a modern, self-determined culture; and a political aesthetic of romantic symbolism, mass mobilisation, a positive view of violence, and promotion of masculinity, youth and charismatic leadership

Sorry, I've been and I hate war.
It represents the ultimate breakdown in human potential.
I don't want anyone ever to be involved in war again. I would gladly sacrifice my life for that. Freakin' gladly.
While I agree with the war part.. It's a matter of the nature of the animal that we are. We are part of nature and hence we wage war.. We are not the only animals that do..
War in part is one way nature tries to control our population, something that we seem not willing to do..
catman - Being young and impressionable, they buy what some in the military are selling: killing 'the enemy' is patriotism.
Being a solider, Marine , sailor, airman is not all about killing the enemy, matter fact the vast majority of those who join the military see no combat. And most spend there time doing a lot of dull boring things.

In every major disasters that the US has sent aid to it was the military that provided the aid did it.
Haiti, Somali, etc.. Most people do not realize that the whole Blackhawk down was not about killing the enemy but seeing that food and medical supplies would get to the people that needed them..

Through out history every military was and is made up of those from the lower classes.. Not all but a lot.. It is nothing new..

The last person in the world who wants to go to war is a professional solider, because they are the ones to die..

I do not know were you got this idea that killing the enemy is what shows patriotism, but it is very wrong..

That $.86 cents an hour you got during the 80s is quite a bit more than I got during the 60s. And there are a multitude of ways to serve your country other than carrying a knife and a rifle.

Never said there were not other ways to serve your country. Also never said that being in the military was the only why to show patriotism.
catman - Bully this:
Patriotism stopped being a reason to enlist when we came to have an all volunteer armed service. It's now an occupation like fireman or policeman. It pays pretty good, too, when compared to a drafted army.

BS.. I and plenty of men and women joined to serve our country, i.e patriotism. And even when there was a draft there were career men and woman.. And the pay sucks.. When I joined in 82 i made .86 cents an hour.. Being on call 24/7..
And what you said makes no sense.. An all volunteer Army is more patriotic than being drafted..

Another reason for the is teacher competency.. I am not talking about based of performance of students.. To many variables there to blame it just on the teacher..
But competency in knowing how to teach and the material they are hired to teach..
There are teacher teaching that have no business teaching.. period,.

Another thing is discipline.. Or the lack of it..

and last but not lest is all the testing they do for government funds.. My kids spent a month not learning but learning how to take a test and get the best score.. And all it was for was to get government money..
cyou299 - what non-sensical self defining black/white thinking. Really, nobody would care if the CEO made a zillion dollars, if he also paid a living wage. This is like a 'duh' moment.
it's the fact that they (some) don't. For instance, the Waltons are right at the top of the richest people on the planet...and a significant amount of their workers are on taxpayer welfare. When we talk of 'inequality', it is more than a rhetorical bow.
Living wage?? Ok you use Walmart as an example.. Let me ask you this.. When did working retail become a career choice? Also a couple of studies show that Walmart's health care plan is more affordable and offers better coverage than Obamacare..

I lived in Australia for a year and my partner lived there for 10 years, the mim wage there is $15 AUD which is 13 USD.. Great you say.. Not really
the cost of living is at lest double what it is here.. Example a 20 once soft drink was 4.50 AUD, While I lived there food ran approx 300 AUD a week and we had a garden to help out.. Clothing, it was cheaper to have someone in the US buy it and ship it there than to buy it there..
So that 15 an hour does not make much difference..

You really think that upping the mim wage will keep people employed?
No it will not it will cost a lot of folks jobs because companies will then find it cheaper to cut jobs and put in automation..

When soldiers, cops, EMS workers all start making double what you want then I will be on board.. Right now a person starting out in EMS or the Military does not make 15 dollars an hour.. But you want Wendy's, or Walmart to pay folks that for unskilled work?? You really think that someone stocking selves should make more than someone trained to save lives?

I would love to know that too..

But to this administration blowing you in the direction of minority is racist..

And to add if we want to be a society were race dose not matter crap like this needs to stop.. And the media and government are the main one spewing it out..

Here we go again with the " Bush did it".. Just because someone else did does not give one the right to do it..
Was not Obama and the left suppose to be the era of transparency and truth in government?

Really? Look what I'm going to have to do to renew my driver's license. Look at what I had to do to originally get that license. Look what I have to pay for all the safety elements built into modern vehicles, mandated by government. Look at how I have to fuss with that darn seat belt each and every time I get in and out of my car. Look at the insurance I am forced to buy just to own the car. Look at all the many, many rules I have to abide by on the roads. Look at the special restrictions they may put on older drivers to demonstrate their driving ability periodically as they age, which I think should be done now that I'm approaching that demographic. I support all these requirements and none keep me from driving a car legally.

And as I have pointed out to you several time, to get a carry permit you have to jump through as many hoops if not more in some states..
Georgia runs you finger prints through AFS, NCIC and the FBI took me over 6 hours just to get my last permit..
But Charles Manson can get a drivers license if he was let out..
How do you think his minions got to the places they did ? By car of course..
workhard2play - The problem with people carrying guns for their own protection is that they are living in fear and are more likely to shoot an innocent based on that fear than having to protect themselves from a perpetrator. Paranoia and guns are a bad combination.

Really? Let me ask you this.. Does having a fire extinguisher also make me paranoid? I have one of those too.. Never had a house fire but I have one.. I do not live in fear of a house fire, but I have one.
Do you carry a spare tire (for your car)? How about a first aid kit?
How many things in your life do you have just in case something happens that needs that item? And could save someones life.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
