posted @ Tuesday, September 13, 2011 - 21:21Why not save the exterior of Rutherford and gut the interior and make it a student center for Myers quad students or just renovate the rooms or do a combination of both. Next , build a architecturally compatible structure on the north side of the building where the parking lot is. The stucture would house students and could include underground parking and other amenities. Connect the two structures via a breezeway with the historic northside facade as an interior design element. Go look at the Athens Clarke County historic courthouse and addition as an excellent example of restoration and modern addition without sacrificing the integrity of the historic building. Saving Rutherford and repurposing the building as a student center is an environmentally sound move. Do the modern addition as a LEEDS certified project and everybody wins! This should not be a win lose scenario ....Cmon UGA think outside the box er'.... building!

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases. Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
