Forecast: Athens area jobs to grow by 1.2 percent

Good to hear about more jobs, but is the average pay level ?

Where I work, business is good, but they keep stringing along the temps in hope they might, maybe hire them full-time and won't replace the full time employees that quit with another full-time person. In one dept., the turnover rate is very high. If I was a temp, I'd work 6 months and if no possibility of full-time hiring, walk out on them and go to another temp job if needed. Then they would have to retrain another person. To understand the company, when not needed, they dropped temps like a hot potato when they feel like it.

Can Ferguson change the 'ritual' of black deaths?

Sharpton's solution is twofold: Change the nation's policies on policing, and repair the black community from within. Sharpton, who is as much a part of the ritual as police tape. He began by issuing a collective call of responsibility. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson arrive.

Maybe Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson should be involved before it gets bad. You don't see them in Detroit or Chicago, trying to stop the black on black killings there.

No photos: Parents opt to keep babies off Facebook

Oh Facebook, a blessing and a curse at the same time. You do get to keep up with family and friends vs. get to listen to all their inane, I'm mine so sick comments (block them). Your mileage can vary - I left it behind and am happier with my personal info safer.

Refugee group hopeful despite opposition in Athens

There is a difference in these refugees who left their country because of ongoing ethnic strife in Burma and other countries and are here legally vs. illegal immigrants.

I agree that it would strain local resources to support them, but most, if not all of them, would try to find work at some level vs. some natural-born welfare public housing citizens that won't try to get jobs and keep having babies to get more gov't ( really our's ) money.

So, who is more of a dead-beat and drain on our resources ? Do we send them back to their homeland ? In my opinion, in the long run, these refugees would/will be better citizens than others !!

Preps football: Region 8-AA at a glance

Washington-Wilkes will be my pick. They have an long established hometown base of players and for upcoming players.

For some counties, recruit better stronger faster players to move into the county.

Winder woman loses money in car-buying scam

I sold a car through Craigslist, but then I'm honest.

I would never buy or send $$ unless I actually saw / checked out the car, though. The deal would be done in person in an area where police patrol regularly.

There is hope yet, a glimmer of the the "Junkyard Dawgs" defense in the remaking is needed.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
