Georgia teachers rally against state health plan

@Treyinathens: Funny how there is outrage when cops, firefighters, and soldiers (who also get a leave of absence during their service) receive cuts or less benefits but when it's teachers there's people like you who like to bring up their time off and others who suggest they somehow work less than the average employee anywhere else..

Man reunited with family after AP photo published

Apparently he had something to run from: http://www.wcax.com/story/24193817/2-suny-plattsburgh-students-arrested-...

Expulsion and facing felony charges, nicely omitted from this story to give that warm fuzzy feeling. Looks like everyone does have a story to tell, but good journalists tell the entire story...

Police: Fla. girl, 8, was victim of predator

"Smith had been arrested 19 times since 1977. He had been found guilty on lewd and lascivious charges, charges of trying to lure girls in a van and charges of showing pornography to minors - but with time served he was ordered to spend only a year in jail"

Meanwhile, petty criminals and drug possessions require mandatory minimum sentences where perps spend years and years behind bars....no wonder our prisons are overcrowded with the wrong people.

3 days in, WikiLeaks trial comes into focus

@Farmer GA: He has already pleaded guilty to the lesser crimes which is all he should be punished for -- simply because he went against his oath (which almost every politician is guilty of but I digress). However, if you sincerely think exposing atrocities committed during wartime deserves an "aiding the enemy" charge which is a step down from treason and carries a life sentence while the perpetrators of these heinous acts walk free in military guise and simultaneously "defend our freedoms"you are warped and sadistic.

Does he deserve a life sentence for revealing the truth which caused no casualties and exposed a clandestine protective culture prone to sexual abuse and war crimes?? Not knocking our brave men and women at all, but we the people deserve transparency and REAL accountability among those who represent us across the world, otherwise we continue to fight endless wars and exhaust military resources in parts of the world where there is no vested US interest!

Oconee County ranked first in state in health, economic factors

@Anonymous Dude: This happens not only in Northeast Georgia, but on a macro level across the entire country, AD. Affordable housing is a term that is open to broad interpretation, but as often is the case: you get what you pay for.

Oconee County citizens may not choose to have subsidized housing because it ends up costing more in the long run. Most counties with higher subsidized housing as indicated by this graph, end up paying higher property taxes and costing the federal government more in terms of Medicaid payouts. Thus, in a more economically diverse population, everyone generally pays more for basic services. lower public housing has ensured that county residents' property values remain high because no one is receiving access to its services without actually paying for them.

Obviously proximity to better paying jobs is going to be an indicator of economic and physical health of any community. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

That being said, the map may be a bit deceptive because even some of these "green" counties (ones that rate higher) have neighborhoods and areas of economic disparity (Clarke, Gwinnett, Newton) .

It would be interesting to see if the strength of correlation between red counties and percentage of subsidized housing. Maybe this may havemore of a role in economic vitality than proximity to jobs that pay well.

North Dakota governor approves 6-week abortion ban

If men could have abortions, they'd be available in every corner drug store. Why do we have to keep treating women like they are not capable of making their own decisions and government must be the the dictating force in what they can or can't do?

Athens Judge Patricia Barron overcame obstacles in path to success

Emory president's essay draws criticisms

Anyone who knows American history knows that the three fifths compromise can be attributed to saving the country from almost imminent destruction at a critical juncture during our nations founding. It's very barbaric to think of slaves as only 3/5 of a person, but one should understand the context Wagner was using.

He was illustrating a "compromise" between states with differing opinions, something that doesn't happen anymore in our current political establishment. It's a shame really...on so many levels that this is even a topic for outrage...

Puerto Rico denies gays right to adopt children

@torqinwrench: But your argument was "in a hundred years or so those genetically predisposed to homosexuality will not be an issue any more" which has nothing to do with being able to procreate sexually. Suggesting that gays will somehow go away because they are unable to bear offspring is a really bad (and really stupid) argument because most homosexuals have straight parents.

While you may have homosexual friends, I doubt they would be fond of your assessment that one day "people like them" will one day be eradicated because of their inability to procreate. Your friendships and acquaintances do not excuse your ignorance.

Puerto Rico denies gays right to adopt children

@torqinwrench: Using your logic, the gay "problem" should have already worked itself out by now... but it hasn't.

Sorry, your ignorant theory that only gay people have gay children stands in stark contrast to reality, but you keep telling yourself that heterosexuals are somehow genetically superior to homosexuals if it helps you sleep at night. Spread your hate mixed with pseudo science somewhere else, please.

Atlanta police review use of Taser on fighting teenage girls

It astounds me every time something like this happens. God forbid you teach your kids not to fight! Then get all upset when they act like wild animals and have to be tazed by the LEO that has to pry your obnoxious kids who obviously learned no respect for authority off each other.

I think stories like this are only in the papers and TVs to get a reaction out of the 80% of people who do have common sense and decency. What amazes me even more is the group of people who post on here that still think educators and administrators are the ones who are to blame for the deteriorating conditions in public education.

Oconee report shows how woman took child from day care

@Pootie Tang: They did, they confronted the woman and told her not to leave. Not everyone is built to physically confront others. How do you know the teacher is not physically handicapped? You weren't there so you don't know the situation and saying that they deserve to lose their jobs for doing everything they are trained to do in this type of event is absurd, I hope you never lose your job for following protocol.

The issue was resolved quickly and non-violently as opposed to having any good teacher severely injured, hurt, maimed, or killed.

Violence, contrary to what media and culture may have indoctrinated you to believe is not always the answer.

Lilburn man, 69, charged with murder in driveway shooting

@CharlesB: It seems like you are making a defense of his actions but I have to say the evidence (not subjective) remains that Diaz's car was at the end of the driveway, leaving.

Are you really blaming a kid for NOT getting out of the car for a gun wielding man? Would you be so brave?

The boy and all the occupants were unarmed.

I'm not sure why you think Sailors should have missed, there were four people in a car, it's not that hard to miss at least one of them. I actually used to work near this area and while it's not prime real estate, it's not exactly southwest Atlanta either but I digress.

If he felt threatened or uneasy, he should have called the police and waited IN HIS house with his weapon ready. The police station is literally less than 5 minutes from Hillcrest Drive.

There are a lot of things that aren't clear in this story, you are right about that but let's not be so quick to defend this guy, he quite possibly is guilty of malice murder.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself.
