Gov't offers new approach to classroom discipline

The solution to this problem is not simple. There are absolute differences in cultures which concern what is and is not acceptable behavior. Teachers only have these students 7 or 8 hours a day. What is okay at home is not necessarily okay at school. Clear expectations and consistent discipline are necessary in schools. How this is accomplished is tricky and often misunderstood. Every parent should be a teacher for one week. Attitudes would change.

Police: No beer led to ceramic squirrel stabbing

When I read the headline, I thought I would read a story about someone stabbing a ceramic squirrel. I couldn't imagine someone angry enough to stab a squirrel.

Outgoing Phenix City superintendent sues system

What's wrong with a year-to-year contract? This would solve a multitude of problems. I know the automatic response is the great talent would go elsewhere if only offered a one year contract. Maybe so, but that alone speaks volumes about an applicant. If you're that good, your contract will be renewed.

Athens cop kicks in door to save assault victim
maxcat07 - @Joe Johnson: For what it's worth, Joe, I think you're doing a great job. Your stories are the first ones I read. Take more than restroom breaks and get yourself something to eat. Enjoy the holiday season, and forget about the cranks here.

I agree with this. Keep up the good work, Joe. We're all free to express our opinions but some are better ignored.

Athens cop kicks in door to save assault victim
concerned citizen in athens - This guy needs "behavior modification" treatment.
Three years in a halfway house would be a good start. I know this guy personally and he's actually a pretty good guy without alcohol and drugs. I've seen him do well for a period of time; his rap sheet does not warrant "throwing away the key".
We are all God's children.
We are all God's creation and we have our own will. We become God's child when we accept Jesus Christ as our savior. If you really want to know what God would have us do with this "creation", read your Bible. God does not want us to allow this kind of behavior to continue. This "creation" has had far too many chances to modify his behavior. He apparently is incorrigible and the only problem I have with "throwing away the key" is that my tax dollars will be used to keep him away from society and he will be breathing the same oxygen I am. And, by the way, who's forcing him to use alcohol and drugs?

21 arrested in coastal Georgia prostitution probe

If I was in a place with only one cop, I'd want him to help me. Most places have more than one cop to respond to multiple crimes. Just saying.

21 arrested in coastal Georgia prostitution probe

@hang em high: It most certainly is a free country. Does this mean that people should be allowed to run amok and do anything they please? I think not! We are free to obey the laws that are in place for our protection and the protection of others. If you have children, you should be very happy that we don't live in a country where anything goes, just because it feels good at the moment. There are consequences to our actions and, unfortunately, the people around us are affected.

@pevaguy: Are you saying this should be ignored? These women are being exploited and these men are demeaning themselves by paying for sex. Believe it or not, the people who love both suffer because of this activity.

Blackface costumes revive controversy at Halloween

If a black person painted themselves white, would there be this kind of outrage? Doubtful. What's the big deal? I know people who are attempting to tan themselves to very dark. Is this disrespectful? I don't know too many people who are bleaching themselves. Should white folk be concerned? And on and on and on. There are so many more things we should be concerned about.

Boy who killed Nazi dad at age 10 to be sentenced

How sad! This young man killed his dad by putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger. I'm not sure what the answer is, but he will definitely need long term help whether in an institution or in a home. Where is his birth mother? The stepmother seems to really care for him maybe

Athens area woman returned to prison in murder-for-hire plot

This old gal is a sociopath. There are more of these around that you realize. Most don't try to hire a killer but wreak havoc in lots of other ways. Check out this site: http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html Be careful that you are not victimized by someone like this.

Jamie Hood booted from court hearing, judge close to setting trial date

This is the most arrogant piece of work I've ever heard of. He really believes he can control even the justice system. Where is he incarcerated? How has he made it so far without getting his butt kicked? That's what he really needs. Somebody to just beat him to within an inch of his life. He makes me sick!

Father kills son, himself at YWCA offices in NH

What a sad story. I'm sure this little fella loved both his dad and his mom. Our children are so valuable. Why, why include them in so much heartache and despair? God have mercy on us all!

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
