Dozens of Clarke school jobs to be cut next year

and we continue to offer dollar for dollar state income tax credits for contributions to private schools while no such credit is offered to people who would like to contribute to public schools. We just raised the retirement income exclusion
in 2012 by $30000 per taxpayer. This is after excluding social security from income on Ga returns. We changed the "birthday tax" to a system that has caused so much confusion the tag office considered hiring additional security and
we wonder why we have no money. I would like to know what % of our states population has taxable retirement income above 60000 excluding social security
that did not retire from a state or federal job.

Isakson: Obama has no power to sidestep debt ceiling

@Ross: You know Ross, I think congress is an insult. Both parties, both houses. I sort of like what Will Rogers said "I could have got into one of the Military Academies but I was to proud to talk to a congressman."

Athens delegates finish whirlwhind pre-legislative tour

Mr Cowsert,
You ask for sympathy for lack of resources. With resources so tight, Why is the state offering dollar for dollar tax credits to taxpayers who make contributions to private schools ? I have nothing against private schools. I just don't understand why the state is helping to fund them. I thank all of you for your service.

@jlscott: "Johnny is a senator, not a congressman. Looks like you need to revisit the ninth-grade civics class yourself there, Rocco Flamefart."
Wow that ninth grade civics class states "The congress of the United States
is made up of two houses the Senate and the House of Representatives." I guess that means the senate is part of congress and if Johnny is a senator then by definition he is a congressman.

@Labfan: Thank you for you sarcasm and for changing my quote to what you wanted it to be. That seems to draw positive responses on here. You are right the functionality of the rocket launcher was precisely the point I was trying to address.

@Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass: Point taken, I was simply trying to state my view on the second amendment. I do not believe the NRA and the second amendment are one and the same. I think the NRA grabs power over politicians by thumping the second amendment the same way some religious leaders do by thumping their particular truth document. I am not against guns I am for children. I appreciate your comment. Of all the negative comments I received for stating my views, You made a point without any sarcasm or judgement of my character or intellect. Thanks and have a good day.

Oconee sheriff boycotts gun dealer over gun ban to public

In a gun buyback in LA two rocket launchers were turned in. Bearing arms as mentioned in the constitution did not refer to automatic weapons or rocket launchers because they did not exist. I am proud of the Georgia company for actually doing what it thinks is responsible. The companies bottom line may suffer because of this decision. To me that is a company actually sacrificing for the greater good. Scott Berry made no sacrifice he can buy these guns some place else.
Everyone has the right to debate guns and the right to do what they think is right
for the safety of their children. There is potential for overlap here. As for me if I err in this debate it will be on the side of children's safety.

Broun, Collins slam 'fiscal cliff' deal

“He will always vote to ensure American taxpayers are able to keep more of their hard-earned money,” Thompson wrote in an email. “President Obama’s fiscal cliff package increases the deficit not reduces it; therefore, Doug would have voted no.”
If Doug would have voted no , I assume he prefers that taxes rise on everyone.
It only took two sentences for Doug to contradict himself. He will fit right in with
Georgia's gerrymandered congressional delegation.

Veterans meet with youngsters at elementary school program

I was lucky enough to attend a similar program at Barrow East (old Gaines School) in Clarke County. The program was outstanding, There were veterans from WWII, Vietnam, and the middle east. They were introduced one by one by the students. Then the students read poems and letters of thanks to these great
people as well a giving a history of veterans day. Thank you to all veterans, teachers, students and parents for a great program. I am impressed and appreciative of all of you.

Fitz: 'Obamacare' has serious fiscal implications

This law does not address the larger question of reducing healthcare cost in this country, Neither does repealing it. The question is what can we do to bring the cost of health care down. One suggestion would be the "affordable medical education act" I just made that up but in theory it would help to educate medical professionals at a lower cost thus increasing the supply then maybe the market could work its magic. Just a thought and does everything involved with medicine have to be "for profit" could there be some parts of it that are not necessarily for profit but benefit everyone. I grew up here and at that time the doctors I knew were universally loved and respected they weren't in most cases the businessmen many of the current crop are. There was not so much medical marketing especially on TV. I wonder what % of ads are for RX drugs suggesting you "ask your doctor about _____. And they did not find it necessary to have multiple offices. And you didn't have to pay to park at the hospital. These are just thoughts for discussion I don't know the ends and outs of all this.

Kissane: Charter amendment isn't answer for schools

As long as this state allows a tax credit (dollar for dollar reduction in state tax liability) for donations to private schools and does not allow that same credit for donations to public schools, I will remain a skeptic of any of their proposals.
Those schools are called "private" for a reason. I have no prejudice against private schools. Parents make private decisions to send their children there. There is certainly nothing wrong about that However when the state government legislates public money to private schools I disagree.

    No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
