Pitts: Life always catches up

More of the same left-wing malarky...oh, nice column, Mr. Pitts.

Pitts: Pushing the wrong panic button

For a fresh perspective on whether we're becoming socialist, anti-Christian land where the government can swoop in and confiscate our guns, ask anyone here visiting from a foreign country. Most of them I talk to think this idea is very funny.
whatsthepoint - How long do we have to wait for her to play the race card?

NRA's new president has penchant for bold words

@BeagleDawg: Have you or anyone you know ever had a freedom taken away by the government or by "anti-rights radicals?" It's always just a "threat." Give it a rest and go take a walk and talk to people.

NRA's new president has penchant for bold words

@BeagleDawg: Franklin was drunk and trying to impress a teenage girl when he said that. He was mostly right. But I'd bet that the parents of the kids killed in Connecticut would gladly give up a little bit of "liberty" to get their children back.

NRA's new president has penchant for bold words

@TeeWee: I get that, have heard that. Yet I don't think the founders foresaw mass murders at elementary schools and movie theatres. (They probably didn't foresee movie theatres, for that matter.) Different times call for different laws. We as a people are armed to the friggin' gills. How about making it just a teewee bit tougher for lunatics to arm themselves for "combat?"

Dupuy: More guns, more gun profits, more gun deaths

Strong and true are those words. Hard to believe our reps are okay with weekly slaughters.

And with this appointment, the NRA moves ever closer to being the new millenium KKK.

Camera catches Athens burglary suspect eating pot in police car

He looks way more like Chris Rock than Billie Thomas, the actor who portrayed Buckwheat in the "Little Rascals" series.

Pitts: Rand Paul gets schooled at Howard
melmarino -
Where did he imply that?
: When "Farmer" wrote that LBJ's war on poverty led to the massive breakdown of the the African America family, he/she's implying that they relied on government programs rather than hard work. Seemed pretty clear from his/her comment.

Pitts: Rand Paul gets schooled at Howard

@Farmer GA: Let's not be so simplistic. The disparity of wealth that proliferated during the Reagan and Bush regimes have had a whole lot to do with the decline. Your implication that a whole race of people is comfortable living on handouts is repulsive.

What Others Say: Senate gun vote 'dark day for America' (San Jose Mercury News)

@OrneryConservative: Good point, because you never know when your kid is going to pull out his own piece and gun you down.

Okay, we've wrestled this issue down and slapped it silly. I've tried throughout the day to offer a bit of good-natured sanity, and now I'm tired.

@grove600: Ah what a sweet dream. Your free society sounds like a real Utopia. (Would we be allowed to put our guns down before playing tennis or frisbee with our kids?)

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
