Indiana newlyweds die in apparent murder-suicide

Sounds like just the kind of person you never want to make mad. Prayers for the family.

Officials confirm first Ebola case diagnosed in US

@FanaticalModerate: You obviously don't have loved ones in the army who could potentially be sent over to fight this. I don't think putting our soldiers in harms way is the right choice for anything, especially something that has nothing to do with us. They need to educate themselves just as we are doing here. I don't think soldiers with no medical training are capable of that. No matter what your argument is, I just don't see the point and I don't think it's right. Someone with no medical training or schooling has no place going to fight the spread of a disease. They are trained to fight people, not medical conditions.

Athens man with HIV indicted for having unprotected sex

The HIV/AIDS and STD statistics in Clarke and surrounding counties are common knowledge. At least it should be. And even if it weren't, why would you put yourself at risk like that? Why would you choose to have unprotected sex with ANYONE, especially someone you don't know.

Just think how much worse it's going to be when that idiot president send soldiers overseas to "fight" ebola. What's going to happen when they come home from over there and spread it here. I have family, young family, in the army. One in the medical field. I am scared to death that they are going to be called to go do this. It doesn't make sense.

Paul Oliver's family sues NFL over his suicide

I'm just wondering who it is on these teams telling these men they HAVE TO keep playing after they have head injuries. Who is it that holds a gun to their head and says there will be consequences if you dont continue to play. I don't think that person exists. They know the risks of playing and continue to play. They see the effects of injuries, be it head injuries or other types, on players around them and they continue to play. No one deserves to be sued because these men made the choice to continue to play.

Windows smashed, arrests made in Ferguson protest

Can someone please explain to me what looting, rioting and vandalizing does to glorify the memory of Michael Brown. What does it do other than put those idiots in a situation to be shot or beaten by police officers. Which will only continue the cycle. They need to exercise some common sense and stop being stupid just for the sake of being stupid. They aren't helping anything.

Intruder gets into White House

@Libralady: He hasn't done anything to earn my respect. And he doesn't respect our country and shows it with his actions. He'd rather support every nation except the one that he is supposed to be the leader of. He'd rather put our soldiers in harms way by sending them to Africa to deal with the ebola outbreak. Tell me again what a soldier can do to fight that? He'd rather send aid to foreign nations while we have our own financial problems here in the US. Tell me again why the wellbeing of other country's citizens is more important than ours? The man spends more time on vacation and on the golf course than he does worrying about the problems in our country. But that's probably better anyways, I can only imagine how many more problems we would have if he actually spent more time working.

30-person brawl reported in west Athens

"Many at the scene of the fight laughed and joked about it, police said"

Of course they did. Because what's funnier than watching a group of wanna be thugs beat up another kid? Big question is, where are their parents? Another question is why weren't the ones still at the scene arrested? This is why things like this continue to happen. Shooting, stabbing and fighting every time you turn around. Yet we never hear of any type of punishment. Just give them probation and let them back out on to the streets to continue on their path criminal ways. These teenagers clearly were not disciplined as children and have no fear of consequences for their actions. Let Adrian Peterson loose over there with some switches...maybe he could teach those kids and their parents a lesson or two.

Teen with Down syndrome represents ninth-graders at North Oconee homecoming

That school and those young adults should be applauded. Other schools and children should look to them for guidance in a time where nice, well behaved children are a rarity. It's refreshing to read a story involving teenagers that doesn't also involve violence, crimes and drugs.

Two indicted for Athens home invasion, robberies, kidnappings and assaults

If the people who came out and marched and preached for change actually took action on their suggestions and not just ran their mouths a change might come about. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are nothing but fame whores who really do nothing but talk and support the foolishness that goes on after incidents like Ferguson. What does rioting and looting show? We are all made equal. No matter the color of your skin, your religion, your pay grade. We all breathe and bleed the same as the next person. We seem to be living in a time where it's okay to hurt others, it's okay to do things without fear of the consequences, it's okay to be dumb as a rock and unemployed with 12 kids, it's okay to feel that you're entitled to get assistance from the government because that's all you've ever known, it's ok to be a product of your surroundings and upbringing instead of rising above it. When are people going to stop and realize that barely making it in life is not good enough? When are people going to wake up and decide that they want more for themselves and their children than welfare and ignorance. When are people going to take action on their words and actually make a change. It has to start somewhere.

US to assign 3,000 from US military to fight Ebola

Are you serious!! Why is their ebola problem a problem that our soldiers have to handle. What kind of training do they have that will help them to discontinue the spread of this virus. This is exactly how it is going to spread here and wipe out hundreds of thousands of US citizens. Let them handle their own problems. Africa is not nearly as poor as it would have everyone believe it is with their commercials displaying starving, fly covered, skin and bones children. I wish this jack a** of a president would spend as much money and put as much effort in to making sure the people of the country that he is supposed to be the head of are taken care of. How about the sick, starving, dying, under treated, homeless, poverty stricken people that live right here in the US? Mr. Presi-dont has his priorities all out of order. I'll be glad when his four years is over. I feel sorry for the person who comes behind him. They're going to have a hell of a mess to clean up. I just hope it's not too late, and this country isn't too far gone to be fixed.

I kinda wish he had heard his brother say " Come to the light". Then maybe he would have shot himself and we wouldn't have to be dealing with his bulls**t antics and Buddy Christian would be home playing with his beautiful children.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
