Two people wearing t-shirts depicting alleged Athens murderers escorted from Cedar Shoals High School

@snarkydude: School leadership can only do so much. They don't get paid enough to parent these children as well. I don't know how old you are, but you and I both know that if we had behaved like these children do today that neither one of us would be alive to have this conversation. Our parents would have beaten our tails, or knocked our teeth down our throats. Parents these days are scared of the kids. They talk back, threaten to report them for abuse, carry weapons that they aren't affraid to use and they aren't affraid to fight with their parents. Verbally and physically. Parents need to step up and kick their kids a$$ for not behaving and minding authority. They also need to be held accountable for their childs actions.

@OCCountry: Theres a big difference between the two. If you were to walk past me in plain clothes in a crowded area, chances are that you would pay little to no attention to what I was wearing, right? In my job I see people with these memorial tshirts on all the time and I pay absolutely no attention to who is on them and why unless it is someone I happen to know. Which I'm sure is the case with the men on these people's shirts. I wouldn't have any idea who they were, and neither would you. They don't scream "HEY I'M SO AND SO AND I MURDERED SOMEONE".

@OCCountry: I never accused them of having good taste, and I never said it was right. But I don't think that a person, who is not a student, should be made to leave an event because of what they are wearing. In that case, every person wearing colors affiliated with gangs should be asked to leave. Red, blue, black, green...all of them.

@snarkydude: Those two people weren't students, they were attending an event at the school therefore the school board has no control over them. And I don't think my argument is off base either. And as far as white kids with confederate flag t-shirts goes, I've seen black kids wearing confederate flags too. As far as underperforming schools goes...I'm pretty sure a students wardrobe has nothing to do with their grades. That has to do with the teachers who have become complacent because they have students who are unwilling to obey their authority because they have parents who teach them that they are above authority and the law and that rules don't apply to them. If we had parents who properly disciplined their children and taught them that they have to obey rules and mind authority figures I'm sure that the performance of the schools would go up.

Not that I'm defending anyone who murders someone, or anyone who commits crime in general. But where is a law that says police can dictate what people wear. The t-shirt says "free my family" and the one guy had the same last name as one of the men arrested. I agree that it's not right, and I myself probably would wear clothing depicting murderers, but I'm pretty sure we live in a free country and should be allowed to wear what we choose to. Last time I checked ACCPD didn't pay for these people's clothes, therefore they shouldn't be allowed to tell them what to wear. And if they truly are family then I don't see that as being gang related. Commence with the negatives...

Pedestrian crosswalk flags to be tried on Prince Avenue

Those flags would be just another trophy for drunk college idiots to steal and hang on their walls. So how long is the county willing to keep up with the cost of replacing them.

Georgia police chief's wife upgraded to fair condition after gunshot

Why would you sleep with a gun IN the bed. I can see beside the bed, or under it, but actually IN it?? Someone trained in handling a gun shouldn't be that stupid.

NYC cop cleared in choking death of unarmed black man

well let me be the first to say that my feelings aren't hurt because you don't like what I have to say... and also let me say that I'm white and I have no problem saying how I feel and I could care less who doesn't like it.

NYC cop cleared in choking death of unarmed black man

@bobbidiboo: If I could give you more than one negative I would. There is a time and a place for jokes and this is not one. A man lost his life, regardless of the circumstances. OH, wait... I forgot, you always make everthing about you and your feelings. You are the biggest "one-upper" I've ever seen. Take your nasty comments somewhere else. You and they are not wanted here.

Athens woman arrested based on victim's video of altercation

@jtsim: She does. Unfortunately there are no mental health requirements for reproducing. There should be. I believe if you aren't mentally stable, or suitable to be a parent you should be sterilized. Both men and women.

Officials confirm first Ebola case diagnosed in US

@FanaticalModerate: You obviously don't have loved ones in the army who could potentially be sent over to fight this. I don't think putting our soldiers in harms way is the right choice for anything, especially something that has nothing to do with us. They need to educate themselves just as we are doing here. I don't think soldiers with no medical training are capable of that. No matter what your argument is, I just don't see the point and I don't think it's right. Someone with no medical training or schooling has no place going to fight the spread of a disease. They are trained to fight people, not medical conditions.

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
