Fay Davis named Ms. Senior Athens 2013

Congrats to Ms. Davis and everyone else who is "living and aging well." I am curious as to what age you have to be in order to participate.

Steak 'n Shake opens Athens location

Cars are backed up on Broad Street and people are standing in line to buy a burger and shake. Here's a thought ... take that same money and purchase some canned food for the Food Bank and feed a family instead.

Effingham Co. judge appoints lawyer to represent dog

I don't understand why a lawyer had to be appointed to represent the dog. It's not as if the dog can testify on his own behalf or help with his defense!

Police announce reward for information on Athens wife-beater

This guy has been in front of every judge in Athens-Clarke County and is still on the streets? What's a criminal have to do in this town to stay incarcerated? Beat his wife to a pulp? Oh, yea...he already did that....geez!

Athens murder victim loved by family, friends

@oneloveone: The article says: "They had four children together, and Johnson treated as his own Bugg’s three kids from a previous relationship." So Ms. Bugg is the mother of seven children.

Stepmom of girl who died gave birth on arrest day
babygirl1996 - Where was the father? It mentioned nothing about him...
She does NOT need either of her own two children back...ever!
She's a POS!
I have no patience for people who hurt innocent children. So what if she ate a candy bar, ground her or take something away. Not run for 3 hours. Totally uncalled for!
I heard about this on the news yesterday afternoon. Apparently, the father works overseas and flew home just hours before his daughter died. Too sad for words.

Bank of America to charge $5 debit card fee

They pay nominal interest on my "interest-bearing" account and now they're charging me to use my debit card?! I left my last bank because they wanted to charge me for "teller transactions." Goodbye and good riddance BOA - I'll take my money now.

Georgia Tech: School's T keeps disappearing

I'll bet if the GT administration increased the student fees to subsidize the $100,000 replacement costs, those brats might think twice if they're paying for it.

Police seek man after stabbing

"Police say Mitchell has an extensive arrest history; his only conviction for a violent crime was in 2006, when he was sentenced to 12 months of probation for beating his then-wife, according to Clarke County Superior Court records."

12 months probation?? Really? The penalty for running a stop sign is stiffer than than!

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
