Black Athenians remember protests to desegregate the Varsity

@Meet_Joey_Black: because all you have to do is read Tea Party posts or follow GOP stars like Ted Nugent to know very little has changed since Jim Crow days in the minds of many TPers

More snow might fall on Athens Thursday night
NewYearNewBeer -

@grove600: I know what you mean. We've had our coldest temperatures in a quarter century and multiple snow storms. Thank god for Global Warming or we would be as screwed as those Global Warming scientist that were trapped in 9 miles of ice. Someone should really tell them that Earth's temperature hasn't increased in 17 years. The Earth has actually gotten colder.
.thanks for offering an example of why learning "science" from Fox news and El Rusho is like learning to read from an illiterate...

Grantham leaving Georgia for Louisville
RightWingExtremist -

We just need guys to wrap up! It's that simple!

actually, we need a new head coach ...keeping Richt ensures continuing mediocrity, nothing more

Good luck Grantham, maybe it was a smart move for you! I just don't think the Dawgs are going to be as good as we want them to be until Mark Richt leaves!!!

UGA's 2013 season: 'We just had a lot of things go wrong'

@Shine:
Shine -

“I just told all the seniors that their watch begins now,” Richt said after the Gator Bowl loss. “Told the future seniors of 2014 that their job begins right this minute, starts with thinking of ways to get better, starts with doing everything on an individual basis to get better and find ways to get your teammates to get better, as well.” Same message should be given to coaches also including the headman himself !!!
yeah well Richt is a mediocre coach (great recruiter tho) who cannot inspire excellence from any player....afraid next year will be another disappointment filled with excuses and platitudes

Georgia man uses tractor to kill 5-foot rattler
McCarthy -

Again, I don't think you are reading my sentence correctly. Let me break it down for you, "That ole rattlesnake does more good than harm," implies the snake is good for the environment. Thus,it brings more good to the world than the perceived harm it would cause by biting that ole fart on the tractor.

Defense fails to hold off Vanderbilt's comeback
Long Sufferer -

I was real enthusiastic when Grantham was hired. He seemed to bring a new vitality to what had been a hum-drum bend and often break defense. The first year was poor but they said we didn't have the right players for his system. Since then he's recruited what he wanted and the results have been so-so at best. His only redeeming aspect was picking a few exceptional individuals who made plays regardless of the system they were in. He's drastically over-paid and there doesn't seem to be that mysterious light at the end of the tunnel we so desperately need to see. Texas had a similar problem and Mack Brown did something about it!
except many folks in Texas --inc earl Campbell--think Mack Brown IS the problem

same situation here

Defense fails to hold off Vanderbilt's comeback
RightIswrong -

The same was said of Vince Dooley prior to 1980 to a certain degree.
football was different then..

.Richt has had 12 years to show us what he has. IMO we've seen the best he can give us...a great recruiter who has never been able to maximize the talent he recruits...a decent planner but mediocre game day coach and strategist...

he's hit his glass ceiling...time for new blood

Defense fails to hold off Vanderbilt's comeback
RightIswrong -

The bad defense not withstanding, half of a national championship team is in St. Mary's hospital. What person in their right mind expected the Dawgs to be undefeated at this juncture with all of their key components missing.....I mean really!
every year its a different set of excuses. imo Richt has hit his ceiling, what we see is the best we'll ever get out of him. I believe he is a good but limited coach and we need someone new.

perhaps we could retain him as recruiter--Richt is awesome at recruiting. just not at coaching.

UGA football notebook: Richt doesn't comment on targeting calls, LB Jenkins says rule 'ruins the game'
chickenhead -

Richt is right not to comment. We all know the calls were wrong, but the game was lost because Richt refuses to admit his approach is totally wrong.

Special teams? Not very special for years. How many games have they cost us over Richt’s tenure. There is something to be said for sticking to your game plan. There is also something to be said for being a bullheaded idiot that refuses to change in the harsh light of overwhelming evidence. I thought he might see the handwriting on the wall after special teams blunders cost a win against V Tech in the Sugar Bowl. Not so.

I thought he might see the light when an inferior SC team won on a fake punt that everyone knew was coming. Except for our enlightened Head Coach.

Our punter has a vertical leap of about 2 inches -- maybe practice catching a few high snaps just in case?

Richt needs to be given the ultimatum to hire a special teams coach or hit the exit. But that won't happen because McGarity is a weakling.
agreed. Mr Roboto hit his ceiling a while ago. time for new blood..

Missouri upsets Georgia, all but eliminates Bulldogs' BCS title hopes
bulldoggeral -

I think they were distracted by the Debt Ceiling Crisis and the Federal Govt. Furloughs ... it was hard to focus when they were so worried about NSF funding for the science labs at UGA and a possible economic disaster.

The offensive line could not negotiate and Obama just won't . End of story.
Curls -

The old Murray showed up today and Georgia suffered for it. Continued miscues on defense plus Murray's turnovers spelled doom. Dawgs looked very poor. No more national championship talk, no more SEC championship talk. Outback Bowl here we come. Murray and Georgia coaching staff are losers.
this is what we have come to expect as long as Richt is coach. he has reached his glass ceiling, and the best we can expect from him is an occasional SEC East Championship separated by disappointing years like this one, where we played far below expectations

time for Richt to retire

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
