Tolerance: A Double Edged Sword

February 7, 2013

Tolerance. As defined by Merriam Webster tolerance is "sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one's own." Does this describe you in any way? My pastor taught me last night that you must be tolerant of other people, judge them not but only your fellow brethren in Christ Jesus. We as Christians should only judge one another on our faith, not others for the lack of it. God will deal with them in his own time.

On the flip side, I see and hear people who claim to be tolerant. Such a post modernistic ideal infers the meaning that one is extremely tolerant of everyone and everything, no matter who or what he, she or it is; with the exception of the most outrageous, vulgar or harmful things. As Dr. Henry M. Morris puts it: "To the postmodern everything is relative. What may be true or right for one person may not be true or right for the next. Ethics is a matter of taste, and what's right is merely a pragmatic question of what works." In religion, as with politics, tolerance can be scarce.

The problem here is that such acceptance is rarely reciprocated to people of faith like myself. I admit that there are some of us who are intolerant to a tee. But for something so boundless as this, why on earth can a man of faith not be tolerable in a post modernistic society? I hear it all the time, just what is so offensive to someone about being a Christian? Anyhow, we must be tolerant anyways. Tolerance is different from condonement. Be patient yet unyielding. Reject those who have only pejoratives to hurl in your direction. Reject those who seek to lead you astray from the will of God. But above all, be tolerant.

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Matthew 7:6 KJV

And he (Jesus) said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

Acts 10:28 KJV

So to all of my Christian conservative friends here, I urge you to be tolerant, not at the expense of your own ideals, but because this will show people what the true nature of Christian really is. When you walk up to a homosexual, don't say "God hates you!" but "God loves you!" Instead of hating someone because they are gay or a liberal, befriend them. If you are a Liberal, do likewise for a Conservative.

If not, you will merely reinforce the common stereotype of Christianity being intolerant to anyone and everyone who is different from you. Tolerance is a double edged sword, it can help or hurt, it can be applied to one side as well as the other.

I learned something valuable here today, didn't you?

    No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
