Taxes kill...literally

April 13, 2012

Ok, so maybe your taxes can't literally kill you, but a new study has found that more people die in fatal car crashes on tax day.

On this one day, which happens to be coming up next week on the 17th, researchers saw a 6% increase in car crash fatalities. One can only assume people tend to be in more of a hurry to get their taxes in on time, which raises the risk of being involved in an auto accident.

The researchers suggest that the stressful deadline may distract drivers and contribute to human error. They also speculate that drivers may have consumed alcohol, changed their driving pattern, or had less sleep on Tax Day to contribute to the crash, but say more research needs to be done to confirm these risks.

They also advise that "public health campaigns should reinforce the importance of road safety on tax day, including emphasizing the need to wear seatbelts, avoid alcohol, reduce excessive speed, and minimize distractions."
