Stay healthy while traveling

January 31, 2012

With cold and flu season in full swing, this is a rough time of year to travel.

Sitting in close quarters in an airplane, train or bus can leave you exposed to germs that could lead to illness.

Whether you are traveling for work or for pleasure, you may want to take some precautions during your trip to make sure you don't end up picking up something nasty to bring home to your family.

Some obvious things to do to avoid getting sick are:

1. Drink bottled water.  Never drink local water (especially in foreign countries) because you can never be sure about their filteration systems.

2. Wash your hands a lot and carry hand sanitizer.

3. If you see your seat mate on a plane or bus is sniffling or looks feverish, ask to be seated elsewhere. Don't feel embarassed.  This is your health and your body.

4. Avoid letting the air blow in your face from the air system on a plane. I wear a mask on planes to avoid those germs. To save money, many planes recycle their air and the air you get could be from the guy in coach class with a nasty cold.

5. Use a straw.  Don't drink directly from a glass at a restaurant.  This goes for any restaurant anywhere.  You don't know how well the dishes are washed. Make sure the straw is wrapped and that you unwrap it.

6. When staying in a hotel, bring your own sheets.  I have heard from friends of mine who travel that some hotels do not change sheets between guests.  This is not all hotels but it does happen and  you could end up with another person's germs from the bed linens.  Also bring your own towels.

7. Drink plenty of liquids.

Have I forgotten any tips that you use when traveling to avoid getting sick?

Everyone have a safe trip and come back healthy and happy!
