Is the sky falling?

February 19, 2013

Just hours after the meteor exploding over Russia was caught on camera, there were reportedly other incidents of an asteroid passing closely by earth and a meteor entering the atmosphere over California.

ABC News explains how space debris hitting the earth is a concern that some scientists are already working to prevent.

The article states that "Nearly 100 tons of space debris enters Earth’s atmosphere every day. Most of it burns up or falls harmlessly into the ocean, but experts still worry that eventually something big will come our way."

The Verge recently posted a heat map, created by Javier de la Torre, displaying every recorded meteor crash since 2,300 BCE. It seems that there are more recordings of meteor strikes in the United States than in other areas.

You can check out more pictures of the meteor in Russia in a slideshow here.

Do you think we should be concerned about the next big meteor or asteroid that could hit the earth?

    Blog: Watching movies by myself

Summary:  I'm not saying it's lonely to be a movie critic, but we often find ourselves seated alone in an empty theatre when we're watching new stuff. I know people who say they won't go see anything unless they have at least one other person to go with, but I've always enjoyed having the place to myself. No cartoons on racism

As you might imagine, the vast majority of the editorial cartoons available these days for publication through the syndicate which supplies cartoons to the Athens Banner-Herald/OnlineAthens are addressing the situation in Ferguson, Mo., where the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer has touched off a number of demonstrations -- some peaceful, but many not at all peaceful, with tear gas fired by police officers and gunshots fired by some protester. read more
