Should you get a flu shot?

November 8, 2012

The flu has been a big topic of conversation at work lately, specifically the flu shot.

Everyone has an opinion about the flu shot.  After getting the flu about 8 years ago, I make sure to get a flu shot every year.  Some folks in the office are dead set against getting the flu shot because they feel the shot will give them the flu.

I have to admit I didn't feel so good after getting my flu shot last week but that's not because the shot gave me the flu but rather because the antibodies in my body were reacting to the immunization.

There was even talk for a number of years that the flu shot causes an uptick in autism cases in children.  That theory has since been proven wrong

Yahoo has listed some common myths about the flu shot.

Here are a couple that stood out for me:

Myth: Seasonal flu is annoying but harmless—it feels like a bad cold, that's all.

Myth: You don't need the flu shot every year.

Myth: You can get the flu from a flu shot.

Myth: You shouldn't get the flu shot if you're already sick.

Myth: If you make it to November without catching the flu, then you don't need the vaccine.

For an explanation about these myths and to find out the truth about these subjects, check out yahoo.com.

Have you had your flu shot this year?

Have you ever had the flu before? If so, how long did it take to recover?

Do you have any hesitations about getting a flu shot?

Rep. Regina Quick pulls no punches on Chamber scorecard

Rep. Regina Quick, R-Athens, was one of two local delegates to score less than an "A+" in the Chamber of Commerce's annual legislative score card. She and I played phone tag Monday when I was reporting the story and I wasn't able to get her comments in a timely fashion. Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
