Should Walmart be on UGA's campus?

January 16, 2013

Walmart is opening it's smallest store in the US on Georgia Tech's campus.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Walmart will be 2,500 square feet. On average, Walmarts in a neighborhood market are around 40,000 square feet with Express Walmart stores at 15,000.

The store will offer limited grocery, pharmacy, health and beauty aids and general merchandise.

Last year's plan of building a 95,000 square foot Walmart in downtown Athens was heavily opposed, but would a miniature Walmart on UGA's campus be a better option?

Would you be in favor of a miniature Walmart on campus?

Do you think there would be the same amount of opposition as the proposed Walmart last year?

Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. Highlight: Would set hours of operation of each Athens-Clarke County "building campus" -- e.g. City Hall, the courthouse and Dougherty Street government building -- at 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Park hours would either be set by the Athens-Clarke County manager or the Mayor and Commission. The ordinance has been derided by members of Occupy Athens and others as seeking to enforce a curfew on public property, thus damaging their First Amendment right to peacably assemble for long-term protests. read more
