Shaking their way to fame

February 15, 2013

YouTube reported that over 12,000 Harlem Shake videos have been uploaded to the site as of Monday evening alone, and it seems like each one is better than the one before.

The original Harlem Shake started in the '80s and is slightly more complicated.  The new recreations involve more creativity.

The UGA Swim and Dive team are gaining celebrity with well over 8 million views on their underwater version.  Their video has been featured on CNN, Good Morning America, the Wall Street Journal and more.

So what makes these videos so popular?  It seems to be the chaos of it all.  They begin with one person dancing, surrounded by nonchalant onlookers.  Then the madness ensues when the screen fills with flailing shakers dressed in outrageous costumes.

Why do you think the Harlem Shake has caught so much attention?

What's your favorite Harlem Shake video?

If you could create one, what would yours look like?
