The Science Thread

February 16, 2013

Discuss anything about science here. Go on, let your inner nerd loose!

Let us begin:

1. Who can tell me what the Chandrasekhar limit is? I'll give you a hint: it has something to do with supernovae, and the resulting white dwarf stars they produce.

1a. And without using Google, what Physicist was this limit named for, and what country was he from?

2. What field of study is Gregor Johann Mendel most attributed to? And what concepts did he introduce into this area? Here's a hint, scientists completed this project in 2003.

2a. Humans possess 23,000 of these. The names of which are Adenine, Thymine Guanine and Cytosine. A composition of the four previously mentioned consists of chemicals such as Alanine, Threonine, Glutamate, Leucine, Arginine, Serine, and a "Stop" compound. Name both of these types by their common name.

Instead, she sent over this statement Wednesday morning and she did not mince her words. (Links and italicized portions are my own; otherwise, it's as she wrote it.) Dear Friends: read more

UPDATED: Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting. Of note: The Athens-Clarke County attorney highlighted that the proposed times are, in essence, placeholders for the commission to change or keep as it pleases.   Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. read more
