School lunch drama

February 16, 2012

While we can all agree that Americans have a liking for non-healthy foods such as hamburgers, one preschool went as far as to take a child's lunch away and replace it with their own.

A 4 year-old brought in a turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice to school one day only to have it taken away and replaced with three chicken nuggets.

The Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human services requires all lunches to have one serving of meat, one serving of milk, one serving of grain, and two servings of fruits or vegetables.

So what do you think of this preschool's action? Are they justified or not?

I can agree that is important to teach people from an early age healthy eating habits but this may be a little much.

Let us know what you think!

Draft language of so-called curfew ordinance

Full text of the Use of Public Right-of-Ways ordinance draft is below. Highlight: Would set hours of operation of each Athens-Clarke County "building campus" -- e.g. City Hall, the courthouse and Dougherty Street government building -- at 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Park hours would either be set by the Athens-Clarke County manager or the Mayor and Commission. The ordinance has been derided by members of Occupy Athens and others as seeking to enforce a curfew on public property, thus damaging their First Amendment right to peacably assemble for long-term protests. read more
