Proposed same-sex marriage amendment could bridge political gap

January 16, 2012

A new proposed amendment to the New Jersey State Constitution could give New Jersey citizens the first opportunity to vote on marriage equality without subjecting gays and lesbians to a deprivation of rights. In theory, the same-sex marriage amendment would end discrimination and protect religious institutions from civil lawsuits and government penalty for failing to condone same-sex marriage. This seems to be an amendment both Democrats and Republicans could potentially back, as it adheres to the Constitutional rights of freedom from government discrimination and freedom of conscious.
Could this proposed amendment be a beacon of light, guiding our country in the promise of a future with inequality?
Anthony Michael Kreis, a New Jersey native and Ph.D candidate at the University of Georgia, School of Public and International Affairs, reports on this amendment in the article below:

Could an amendment like this work in Georgia?

Could this type of amendment really bridge a political gap between Democrats and Republicans?
