One trait for life

January 13, 2012

We all have a laundry list of characteristics we would like to find in our next spouse: funny, pretty, handsome, smart, rich, sweet, etc. But if you had to choose just one, could you do it?

This is the question Match.com columnist Dave Singleton asked single men and women from all over the nation.

Choosing one characteristic proved to be a challenge for many people, but when they did decide they had very interesting explanations.

For Marylander Marisol, 33, having chemistry was her number one pick: “It’s not like the other important characteristics don’t matter. They do. But I can’t think of anything else for the top of the list. I need to feel the chemistry. With a boyfriend, I need that elusive... something."

Peter, 39, admitted that if you had asked him this question 10 years earlier physical attraction would have been the most important but after many failed relationships he has come to appreciate something much more, "I don’t care how beautiful she is; if a woman frustrates me, acts out irrationally or makes me feel like I need to be a mind-reader, I’m outta there. My next girlfriend has got to be chilled out and patient.”

So what tops your list? Would you choose looks over humor, big heart over financial stability, or common values over family oriented?
