Obama calls for big changes

In his reelection speech delivered yesterday in Washington, President Obama alluded to what he plans to accomplish in his second term. 

Amongst other things, he encouraged gun law reform, "Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia, to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for and cherished and always safe from harm."

He called for equal rights for gay marriage. "...for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well."

And he mentioned a need for a reaction to climate change.  "We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations."

Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security as well as immigration reform also received mentions in the President's speech. 

After wrapping up a decade of war and a slowly recovering economy, Obama seems to be shifting his attention to a broader range of issues. 

What did you think of the President's speech?

Do you think Obama will prove more liberal than centrist during his second term?

Are the issues he mentioned in his speech the most pressing of our time? Or should we be focusing our attention elsewhere?

    The committee opted Tuesday night to put off deciding on the ordinance until, at the earliest, its next meeting.
